Petition Letter: Dear Petition reviewers,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to formally request your consideration for dropping the ASTR101 class for the current semester due to unforeseen and challenging circumstances that have significantly impacted my ability to focus on this particular course. I understand the importance of adhering to academic policies, but I believe my situation warrants an exception due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control.

Unfortunately, at the beginning of this semester, I faced a dual challenge—an unforeseen battle with COVID-19 and the recurrence of chronic bronchitis. These health issues not only affected my physical well-being but also had a profound impact on my academic performance (my first assignment and midterm in this course).The onset of my health challenges occurred in October until the present, and their effects persisted for the majority of this time period. During this period, I experienced severe fatigue, respiratory difficulties, and a persistent cough, making it immensely challenging to keep up with the demands of all my courses, including ASTR101. I sought medical attention promptly, and my healthcare provider recommended rest and minimal exertion to facilitate a speedy recovery.

Despite my best efforts to manage my health, the symptoms persisted longer than expected, leaving me unable to fully engage with my coursework. The assignments and assessments in ASTR101 required a level of concentration and commitment that I found difficult to muster given my compromised physical state. I communicated with my professors in other courses, who graciously provided extensions and accommodations, but the unique nature of the ASTR101 class made it particularly challenging to catch up.

I am committed to making up for the lost time and ensuring that my academic record reflects my true capabilities. In the event that my petition is approved, I will diligently plan to retake ASTR101 in a future semester to fulfill the requirements for my degree.
