Petition Letter: As to whom it may concern,
My name is Cameron Garlock, and I am a first-year student at Queens University. I am contacting you
regarding an academic appeal. I would like to drop a course after the deadline (ASTR 101)
I am appealing this course based on extenuating circumstances. Specifically, I have been experiencing
anxiety for many years. This was diagnosed by my family physician. I have attached her diagnosis
as part of the appeal process. I believe the anxiety was heightened or triggered after the mid-terms and
has continued since. I found this semester to be stressful and challenging. The anxiety diagnosis has
affected my ability to carry a full course load. This led to my marks declining in this course.
I have taken the following steps to address my anxiety. I have:
1) I have had many discussions with family physician regarding my anxiety over the years (most recent
Sept. 2023). There was an accommodation for a single room due to anxiety.
2) I have engaged in PASS support.
3) I have engaged in Academic counselling (upcoming).
4) I am trying to work on changing my study habits. Specifically, I have actively sought out
support from the TA and peers.
Although, I take these steps, I continue to suffer from anxiety. I thought I would be able to balance the
course load. The adjustment of being away from home and the pressure of university life has been
challenging so far. The removal of this course (ASTR 101) would help me overcome these feelings and
strive to be successful. I am willing to take the necessary steps to ensure my future at Queen’s
university.
I thank you for your consideration.
