Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am writing to formally request a late course drop for my Summer 2023 classes, with the hope of obtaining a possible refund as I don’t think an extension to finish the courses is possible at this point in time. Unfortunately, circumstances beyond my control have impacted my ability to complete my coursework.

I had initially intended to submit this request soon after realising I would not be able to complete my academic responsibilities. However, obtaining a letter from a medical professional has been a challenging.

Due to not having a designated family doctor, I have been passed around to various healthcare providers and despite speaking to countless people it seems as though no one can help me and it is very disheartening. My efforts to obtain the required letter have been met with frustration, as I find myself caught in a cycle where I’ve been experiencing extended hold times, numerous transfers, and unfulfilled promises for follow-ups. I do not know if I will be able to get individual letters from the doctors I’ve seen. I would have requested the letter from Dr Marceau who was the first doctor I saw prior to being transferred to other doctors had I known where it would lead.

In an effort to avoid further delays I have decided to submit the information and documentation that I currently have access to. Enclosed with this letter, you will find proof of medical appointments starting in June, a referral letter detailing some of my symptoms, records of blood tests, and the prescription provided for the tentative treatment of my symptoms. Additionally, I am currently on a waiting list for an appointment with an endocrinologist, as the previous medical consultations have not been able to provide any conclusive answers.

This situation is one I had hoped to avoid, and it is certainly not one I anticipated repeating. The initial treatment I received in the past addressed only a portion of my symptoms, and unfortunately, some of the unaddressed issues worsened as the semester progressed. Some of these symptoms were blurred vision, memory loss, headaches, fatigue, muscle weakness, hair loss and lightheadedness. Despite my early decision to drop one of my three courses when I began feeling worse, the hope of catching up in my other two courses diminished as the difficulty of accessing proper healthcare and reliable medical advice increased. I acknowledge and appreciate the assistance I have received however, having a doctor take the time to write a letter on behalf of everyone I’ve seen thus far to encompass my medical journey has not yet been possible.

I sincerely request your understanding and consideration in granting my appeal for a late course drop and, if possible, a refund. If I have access to it, I am more than willing to provide any additional information or documentation deemed necessary to support my case.
