I am writing to file an appeal over my Geology104 results.
I am appealing to ¿¿request a review of instructors' decisions on grading of final examinations and/or term work¿ (based on the fact that I cannot get an answer from Dr. Layton-Matthews on how the marks were tabulated.)
I am also ¿¿requesting to waive the 21-day appeal deadline.¿ As supporting documentation shows, I contacted Dr. Layton-Matthews with my questions as soon as I received my final grades, but did not receive a response.
The situation:
As the date for my second Geology lab approached later in the school year, I was very sick. I went to the clinic and was diagnosed with severe stomach flu and strep throat. I had told my professor, Doctor Layton-Matthews, that I may not be able to make it to the lab. He told me not to worry, that ¿¿other arrangements would be made.¿
When it came time to write the lab, I was indeed too sick to attend. I wrote to Dr. Layton-Matthews again to tell him, but I got no response. I wrote the final exam, but I did not do well. I have tried to contact Dr. Layton-Matthews to see how my final mark was tabulated and what arrangements were made regarding my missed lab. He did not reply.
I wrote the first lab/theory mid-term in early term and received marks of 62.5 and 61.6. If my mid-term lab was not considered part of my total mark, was the weight on my final so heavy that it skewed my overall average to a fail That is why I need to check whether Dr. Layton-Matthews excused me from the lab mid-term, or ¿¿made other arrangements¿ as he suggested he would.
I thought I had done everything properly to account for my illness and showed that I was willing to do whatever necessary to make it up.
I contacted academic counselling and they recommended that I file an appeal, hence this letter.

I understand the lab exam is taking place this week, but seeing how my lab is tomorrow, I don't see how I will write it in my current state. I would like to inquire about the course I took with Dr. Layton-Matthews (GEOL 104). Prior to the midterm I was very ill and the Queens clinic can verify this illness. I quickly got in contact with Dr. Layton Matthews and he said we will be able to make other arrangements for the midterm. I sent a couple of emails asking what these arrangements would be, and I never received a response. I discovered I did not pass this course when I received my final grades. I would like to ensure that the midterm was not counted as a zero and what arrangements were actually made. ¿¿
¿¿May 21, 2015 at 4:04:25 PM EDT You should contact your instructor directly to enquire as to the components that made up the final mark. Perhaps he forgot about that If the mark is not adjusted, you could consider appealing for Aegrotat Standing. The student would write a letter to the Associate Dean requesting Aegrotat Standing which means your mark would be based on only the work submitted/completed. If you wish to appeal, here is the link that outlines the appeal process and where you would submit your on-line appeal letter and your supporting documentation.
