Petition Letter: To Associate Dean,
I am petitioning to drop CHEM 112 (Fall, Winter, 2023-2024), and have the dropped course removed from my transcript, if possible given my reasoning below.
My name is Molly (Yingyan) Xiong (student number: 20396785). Due to acute symptoms of severe anxiety and moderate-severe depression, as well as physical health issues that I experienced specifically during CHEM 112, I am unable to complete the designated course work for CHEM 112 within the academic year. The issue is ongoing, and started around October 27th. At the time, I was unaware neither of the severity of my condition, nor dropping the course being an option for me. I thought I only needed academic consideration and had deadlines being pushed backwards. It is clear to this date (Nov. 28th) that I cannot complete my coursework due to my mental and physical health issues.
My health issue specifically impacts CHEM 112, due to its in-person lab sessions that require focus, physical wellness, and socialization. Physical and mental health issues made me behind on coursework that it is not possible for me to complete within the semester. Previously, I have fainted in one lab session. I was also made to take a break by a student wellness center counselor (emily.blacker@queensu.ca), for three weeks. This means I have missed 4 labs in total, 3 lab reports for those 4 labs, as well as 2 additional lab reports that I was unable to complete due to mental health issues.
My health condition requires medication, which was prescribed to me by my family doctor, as an effort for me to get better. However, the medication takes time for me to get adjusted with side-effects such as fatigue and nausea. The overall condition has affected all coursework. I have talked with the lab coordinator, Dr. Boyd. After thorough discussion, it is determined that the best option is for me to drop the course. Please email Dr. Boyd, a.boyd@queensu.ca, for further inquiries.
As for the second part of my request, I have a transfer credit from high school, IB chemistry HL, for CHEM 112. I have taken CHEM 112 for the purpose of learning and knowledge consolidation. If possible, I hope I can remove the course from my transcript as well as I already have the course credit.
Sincerely,
Molly Xiong

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: As for future steps, I will be continuing counseling sessions with the residence counselor, Nadia Fehr (nadia.sawayafehr@queensu.ca), whom I have already seen and planned sessions with. I will be in contact with my family doctor for further inquiries about medication. As for school work, I believe that with a lighter course schedule, I can better succeed in the health sciences program. I am thinking of taking the organic chemistry course during the summer, so my course load may be lighter as well for the second year.
