Dear Associate Academic Dean,
I am petitioning to drop CHEM 311, CHEM 314 AND PSYC271 from the Fall 2023
semester.
I had some on-going mental health and medical conditions throughout the term which I
was hopeful would be resolved in the first few weeks but unfortunately there were other
external factors which made recovery increasingly challenging and the past few weeks
particularly hard. A week ago, my mental health was bad enough that my mother
insisted on pulling me out of school and staying with her or getting checked at a
hospital, which has led to an appointment with a psychiatrist in a few days. I have been
getting treatments such as ongoing therapy and medication throughout the years but
with recent diagnosis and medication changes, the treatments have all led to the
recommendation and referral to see a psychiatrist. This whole process has been
mentally exhausting, disheartening and affected the already ongoing previous mental
health conditions. Originally, I wanted to finish the semester the best I could and had
already planned to only have 2 courses in my second semester with 1 being a
continuation of a full year course.
I am petitioning to drop these 3 classes as unfortunately with the little recovery time left
and my mental health status, I know I would be worse off to end the semester either
failing a class or barely passing just to get the credit and even later learn I needed to do
better and retake the course anyhow. Obviously, this decision was extremely hard and
still not easy writing this letter as I had really enjoyed the content of these courses and
will be retaking them when I can perform better academically.
Assessing whether to keep a class beside the full year course in the schedule was
difficult and I have already had a discussion with my lab coordinator for the full year who
is also the professor for the remainder class. He, along with the teaching assistants,
have been completely supportive of whatever he can do to help and upon discussion
with the academic advisor, dependent on how my psychiatrist appointment goes in the
following days, I may ask about an incomplete to finish the course as it is just the exam
remaining for a better time.
I hope you can understand the circumstances and allow me to retake these classes with
a more stable mental health situation.
Regards,
Kaia
