Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean,
I am writing to formally petition to drop MATH 130 for the Fall 2023 semester. Over the past six weeks, I have encountered significant challenges related to my mental health which has negatively affected my academic performance and well-being. In contrast to the other courses I am enrolled in, MATH 130 places a large emphasis on in-class tests as a portion of the final grade. Despite completing all the required assignments and studying profusely for the tests, my ability to study and my retention of the course information has been severely impacted by my ongoing mental health issues. Unfortunately, this has prevented me from fully performing to the best of my abilities. By the week 8 deadline, I had only received one test mark back and my decision to not withdraw from MATH 130 by the deadline was made with my intention to significantly improve my efforts in this course to achieve test marks I could be proud of. However, as the semester continued, my mental health issues became all-encompassing to the point where they severely impacted my day-to-day life and academic performance. Seeking guidance and support, I met with an in-residence mental health counsellor who strongly recommended I drop MATH 130 to prioritize my health and well-being.
I also have existing physical health issues, the symptoms of which are exacerbated and worsened by stress. My mental health issues have affected my physical health so profoundly that I had to visit the Emergency Room and Queen’s Health Services on two separate occasions in the past month. Permitting me to drop this course would not only allow for my mental health to improve but my physical health as well. This would overall lead to an increased sense of well-being, allowing me to take MATH 130 later when I can work to the best of my abilities.
Should my request be granted, I plan to enroll in MATH 130 during the next academic year of my studies. I also intend to continue seeking regular mental health treatment in the form of counselling and therapy for the foreseeable future. This plan ensures a balanced approach that benefits both my academic pursuits and overall health and well-being. I am deeply grateful for the education I am receiving at Queen’s University, and I am fully committed to my studies. With the appropriate support, I am confident in my ability to overcome these challenges I am facing and pursue my academic career with the proper tools required for success.
Thank you for your understanding and consideration of my circumstances. I appreciate your time and am looking forward to a positive resolution of this matter.
Sincerely,
Evelyn Clay
