Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean Academic,


Thank you very much for your time in reading my petition. I’m petitioning to drop my course GNDS125 (Gender, Race, and Popular Culture).

Due to my special needs, I need specific accommodations to follow courses. Unfortunately, this was not put into place at the beginning of September as there was a mistake in the course I signed up for. Once everything was properly set up, I started doing the course. It took a while to figure out and be put into contact with the right person to help me with my accommodations. Once I was able to book an appointment, it took a while as no openings were free for a while. I was finally able to get my appointment with the advisor and set up everything for my school journey. While I did not have my accommodations in place, I quickly fell behind I was at week 1 when they were at week 3. For that reason, it has directly affected my academic performance. I therefore knew that I would need to drop this course in the hope nothing would affect my academic/ graduation. Since this was related to my accommodations I thought this needed to be addressed straight with the advisor from student services. When I had booked my appointment online, I briefly added a note about this issue as well. I knew there was an 8-week drop deadline, I had therefore called the university the general number and they mentioned I needed to talk to an advisor before proceeding. I don’t know who I talked to aside from a lady’s voice. I only wish to drop this specific course as this is the only course I had signed up for. Since this was my first semester with the online system, I wanted to make sure to not overwhelm myself. I will not be able to finish the course as I fully backed away as things were not working out in any way while I was behind. I would like to please ask if I can take this course in the winter term or get access to another course while this one doesn’t impact my graduation. Going forward I plan on making sure the teachers are informed about my accommodations so I can successfully follow and succeed in any further courses taken for my bachelor's. Since everything has been put in place on my account such a situation should not happen again throughout my journey. I am extremely motivated for my learning and hope I can keep it this way by not receiving any penalties for something that was out of my control. I work very hard for my goals and promise to always do so!

I have attached a letter kindly made by my advisor that supports the extenuating circumstances described in my petition letter.
