Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson
I am petitioning to drop ANAT 215 (Fall, 2023).
Upon returning to school after the fall reading break on October 16, I started to feel like I had less energy and motivation to leave my room and go outside. I started waking up very late with almost no energy, causing me to skip all of my classes, only leaving my room to eat around once a day, and eventually only leaving my house to buy groceries and take exams on campus. The counselor I spoke with and I believe that I have been going through a depressive episode, which has happened to me before. I had nearly no motivation to study or do work, and on the exams I took I ended up cramming, learning all of the content the night before. I stopped taking my ADHD medication, and started to isolate myself unintentionally from my friends and family, which I believe contributed to my deteriorating mental state. This started to have an effect on my studies, especially for my anatomy class in particular. I am used to cramming a lot when I study so I was able to keep good marks in most of my classes, but for anatomy which is very content heavy and purely memorization, I struggled severely. I hold myself to a very high academic standard, and take school very seriously, and I’m very upset with myself that I let go of my control and let my grades slip up. I am very worried that I could do very poorly or even fail this class, which would leave me struggling to bring my gpa back to where it was earlier on this year. Due to the poor condition I found myself in over the past month, I paid little attention and frankly had little care as to how I was doing in my classes. I only recently checked my grades in the class, and by the time the severity of the situation dawned on me, it was over a month past the drop deadline. I am currently back on my ADHD medication; I have talked with my parents about my mental health; I’m starting to regain a schedule, which I think is helping quite a bit, and I’m going to start seeing my therapist who I haven’t talked with in a while.
This situation has really woken me up, and I think that I should be able to get back on track with the necessary support, which my family and a therapist can provide. With a proper schedule in place, and a support system, I should be able to perform at the same academic level I am truly capable of, same as before this episode. I am just very scared of how I would have to spend the rest of my university career trying to make up for this poor mark that I got because I didn’t have the energy or motivation to try enough.
Sincerely,
Sasha Kyser-Burke
