To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing this letter in hope’s that my request to return to my studies earlier than May of 2025 may be approved. After careful consideration and reflection, I believe that returning to studies at this point in my life would lead to more success than my previous attempt. Having the time to consider what strategies may help me achieve my goal and what I am looking for from my schooling has given me considerable insight into why I wish to resume my studies. With a clear set of goals in mind, I have no doubt that, if given the opportunity, my continued studies will end in success.
When considering how many goals I should create to help me be successful in my education, I had to reflect on things that clearly did not work in the past. Within this reflection, I learned that in order for me to be successful, I have to be organized. I also have to have the drive to learn and become more educated. Having an interest in what I am learning is key to me being engaged in a lesson. With this being said, three goals came to mind.
The first goal I have created in order to be successful in my studies is to select classes that I have a deep interest in learning more about. Having a small course load with classes that intrigue me will allow me the time to be able to really dive into my reading and assignments. I have found that in the past, classes that were either a prerequisite or filler classes were harder for me to both study for and complete assignments in. This was due to my lack of interest in the topics that were being covered. I have reflected and noticed that I struggle in classes that I do not find intriguing or interesting. I love to gain new knowledge. However, some topics that were being taught in some courses did not hold my attention. Learning ways to remember information, or completing assignments, on topics that I did not find as interesting is also something I believe I can work on.
The second goal I have created in order to be successful in my studies is to maintain my organization. This encompasses all aspects of each course. I would coordinate on a calendar all of my class times, deadlines, and appropriate times to study or work on each class. In the past, I have fallen behind on my organization. This led me to rush through assignments, submitting them almost minutes before the deadline. With my organizational plan, having time for classwork and assignments will not be an issue. I have implemented this organizational plan in my personal and work life as well.
The third goal I have created in order to be successful in my studies is to seek help or clarification on things that I do not understand, or have a hard time grasping, as soon as I can. In previous years, I have thought of asking for help from my professor or TA as a weakness. During my reflection, I now understand that there are people there to help who are more than willing to take the time if I seek it. I shouldn’t feel like I am bothering them when I ask questions or for clarification on things.
I currently have a 1.456 GPA in my BA Degree in Sociology. I have met all of the requirements for this degree, outside of the minimum GPA of 1.6. In order to reach a GPA of 1.6, I would have to repeat two or three (3.0 Unit) failed courses. If I were to have the opportunity to return to my studies, I would like to repeat three of my failed courses. The failed courses that I would like to retake are SOCY 389, HIST 253, and CLST 201. Each course would need to have a minimum final grade of C+. Depending on when these courses are offered, I may become a full-time student or a part-time student. Having only three courses ensures that my workload will not become overwhelming. Within my current job position at the Limestone District School Board, I may be able to work as well as go to school.
I thrive to gain new knowledge and learn new things. Having the opportunity to widen my understanding in my fields of choice would allow me to pursue careers in areas that I have a deep interest in. I am motivated more than ever to be able to complete my degree so that I may find a position within my field. Over the past year, I have seen individuals in positions that I could have the opportunity to work in once my degree is completed. This gives me the drive to complete my degree so I can begin my new start.
When looking back at the semesters that I struggled the most in, there were some personal life events that had taken place. Two semesters that had the most influential events happen during them are Winter of 2018, and Winter of 2022. Courses that were impacted by these events are SOCY 389, CLST 201, SOCY 227, HIST 253, SOCY 300. Starting with the Winter semester of 2018, my life seemed to be on the right track. However, at the beginning of the new year, my mother started trying to contact me. She had just moved back to Kingston and wanted to start over. At this point, I had not spoken to my mother in around 4 years. She had left my dad in 2013, when I was in grade 11. Her leaving made a huge impact on my life. When she tried contacting me again, it became clear that I was not ready to try and reintroduce her back into my life. My sister has written a letter, attesting to the fact that my mother’s persistent attempts to contact me over the course of several months created a ripple in both my personal life and work/school life. The winter semester of 2022 was my mistake. I believed that I could juggle both a full-time job and school at the same time. At the time, I was working at Community Living Kingston. They had said that working full-time and doing my classes would be okay. They promised to work around my schedule and told me that it would be easy to take time off for school. However, this was not the case. I usually worked evenings, due to classes. When you work at Community Living, there is always the risk of being required to stay if someone does not show up for their shift. This is called being RTS’d. I would be RTS’d regularly, having to work the 3pm-11pm shift and then stay for the overnight, which is 11pm-7am or 11pm-9am. This greatly affected my ability to maintain my focus with my school work. As a result, I ended up failing both classes that I had retaken that semester. I don’t think that working those long hours was the only reason I had failed those classes again. However, working those long hours and the randomization of the shifts left me exhausted on a good day. My sister, who also works currently for Community Living Kingston, can attest to my behaviours and exhaustion during that time in her letter.
Overall, I would like to thank you for the opportunity to plead my case. I would be honoured if I was given the opportunity to complete my studies next year. Thank you for your consideration.
