To Associate Dean of Faculty of Arts and Science,
I am petitioning to late-drop PSYC100 and WRIT125 from the fall semester of 2022. As well as the late-drop of PSYC100 from the winter 2022 semester. During the fall 2022 enrollment period I was under immense stress due to my financial, and psychological situation. During the summer I was employed with the Royal Canadian Navy, based out of Victoria B.C. The money I was earning was going to living expenses as well as rent back in Kingston so that a room was secured for when I came back. I returned home to Kingston in August, after returning I had to immediately move out of my parents and into my own place. In order to pay for my tuition, rent and other living expenses I also had to find employment locally all within a few short weeks before the semester began. My parents were very adamant that I had to be out immediately, so I prioritized moving out to appease them. After moving out I next had to worry about finding employment or else I would not be able to keep a roof over my head or afford food and tuition. I was able to find employment with HMCS Cataraqui, the local Naval Reserve unit in Kingston. I was assigned the duties of 2nd in Charge (2IC) Bar Manager, 2IC Canteen Manager, 2IC Small Boats Custodian, in addition to various other taskings as required. I was authorized a minimum of 16 full days a month for these positions. Additionally, there were mandatory Wednesday training nights and weekend training once a month. Upon securing reliable employment I signed into Solus to select my courses. I enrolled in PSYC 100 but was having trouble getting into any of the classes I wanted. It was early September so it was already quite late to enroll. I was placed on the waiting list for WRIT 125 and I did not believe my chances of getting in were very good. Shortly after getting into PSYC 100 I paid my BAH tuition fees to the amount of $618,21. Highly doubtful I would get into WRIT 125, I believed that my tuition was taken care of for the fall semester. At this point I was very stressed about money and was very preoccupied with work. There was no way I could balance work and school and I couldn’t work less days because I was completely autonomous from my parents unlike most other students. I had to work to afford my living or I would literally be out on the streets. Now I was falling behind in my class but I was so stressed about my financial situation I wasn’t able to pay it any attention. By the time I did, the deadline to drop classes without penalty had come and gone. I continued to focus on work and all this stress was taking a toll on me psychologically. I wasn’t thinking clearly enough to make the decision to contact Queens to drop my class and I wasn’t monitoring my school email, which would have informed me I had gotten into WRIT 125 and was accumulating fees on my account. In February of 2023 my unit offered me a full-time contract as a 2IC Facility manager. I said yes because I was still struggling for money even though I was already working consistently. After accepting this contract there was no possible way I could’ve done school simultaneously. It wasn’t until November 20th 2023 that I received an email in my personal inbox stating that I owe $2908.82. Alarmed by this I immediately contacted the school and they explained to me what the charges were and that I had until December 30th or it would be sent to a collections agency. If the Fs are maintained and I am required to pay the $2908,82 I will be set back immensely. It is my intention to return to school when I have saved enough money to do so. I am hoping this letter can serve as an adequate explanation of the financial stress I was experiencing which caused me psychological impacts. These extenuating circumstances justify my reasoning for this appeal to drop PSYC 100 and WRIT 125 from my transcript. In order for me to be able to submit an appeal for tuition fee amendment I require these classes to be dropped.
I have supporting documents as proof of my employment. If further substantiation is required I can provide a letter or contact info from my superiors at HMCS Cataraqui, where I worked during the aforementioned time period.
