Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to you to petition an appeal to drop two courses after the academic deadline. For the past two years I have been receiving medical treatment for my Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). In the summer of 2023, after enrolling in HIST260 AND DEVS260, my family physician unexpectedly closed their practice and I was forced to come off my proper medication abruptly. I was unable to receive the proper medication for the remainder of the summer which exacerbated my disabilities and made it more impossible than ever before to control my symptoms of GAD and ADHD.
Without the proper medical support combined with the burden of my demanding full- time job, personal emotional stress, and persisting symptoms, I was completely overwhelmed and unable to complete daily tasks. My mental health spiralled during this time and it was difficult for me to even get out of bed, let alone attend to any school related responsibilities.
My former family physician did not respond to any of my recurrent efforts to schedule an appointment before their departure, and they left without a replacement. Due to the ongoing family physician crisis in Ontario, I was unable to receive the proper support to get back on track with my medications and emotional therapy.
I was in a chronic state of anxiety, experiencing frequent panic attacks and this was exacerbated by my ADHD symptoms. This contributed to my feelings of depression and I felt paralyzed, unable to do school work or perform to the best of my ability at my job.
It was not until the end of the summer (when the courses had ended), when I was able to see a nurse practitioner and feel like I could overcome the unbearable feelings of anxiety and depression that I had endured over the summer.
These extenuating circumstances, beyond my control, made it impossible for me to complete my work, let alone with my best ability, and I would hate for it to be the reason I do not succeed at Queen's.
I sincerely appreciate your understanding and I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you again,
Izzy
