Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear, Associate Dean of Academics

My name is Velouria Raymond. I'm in first year and I got the pleasure of studying at Bader college for the first half of my year. I am petitioning today to drop ASTR 101 (Fall,2023).
I didn't do as well in this course as I was hoping, some assignments I excelled in and got 80s/90s and other assignments I didn't even pass. It is not normal for me to not pass assignments so I would go to office hours and ask for an explanation or if I could redo the assignments and the response I got instead was “work harder on the next assignments” or “read the readings more”. In which I did I would spend countless hours on each assignment and I did the readings and made notes and to my understanding I understood the topic but when getting assignments handed back I was told I didn't do the reading and that I should do better. I decided to finish off the year since it already started and hoped that this would change. On one of my assignments which I did after hearing the news about Bader closing down I got a 9/100 which I asked to redo since I was under a ton of stress at the time of writing the assignment and my teacher William Joyce said no but said we could set up a zoom meeting and talk about the assignment to show my understanding in which he would decide or not to boost my grade, once I responded to the email with my availability I never heard back from him.
Then in the transition back home from Bader College I struggled a lot right before exams with family issues that have been going on while I was away but since I was back home I had to help deal with them. I also had to start working since I’ve been back so I could still pay for my bills so every week since I’ve been back I had to work 40 hours a week which it was hard to balance between my professors and I and with my work schedule. My family issues have since then been resolved and life is back to normal. Also, when I come to Kingston in January I won't have to work as much since I will be in residences.
I am on scholarship as it is the only way I can afford to come to school in which I do not believe that having such a low grade is good as it could mean I could lose my scholarship and if I drop the course and its changed to DR to my understanding from what i’ve been told it doesn't affect my GPA.
Below I have inserted images of the emails between William Joyce and I to show that I did reach out and try to improve my grades and to show that he never responded to my email about the zoom meeting.
I am hoping to drop ASTR 101 (fall 2023) since I didn't do as well as I had hoped and if I don't drop this course it could severely mess up my GPA and my scholarship could drop me.

Thank you for your consideration,
Velouria Raymond
