Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am writing this letter of petition to add a course past the course add deadline. The course I am interested in adding is CLST 103 - Roman Civilization which I have been unable to add due to a conflict in my timetable with GPHY 101. I am very interested and passionate about the material this course discusses, as well as the importance it holds as an elective in my calendar. To be clear this course request is for the 2024 winter semester.

I was initially short of an elective for the winter semester, so added CLST 103 to my schedule, which I was initially waitlisted for. Once the semester started I noticed that I was still not enrolled and reached out to Queens academic services. I was informed by a member of the academic services team that the reason for my pending enrollment was due to a conflict in my time schedule. I was further informed that it was possible for me to miss one of the two classes during the conflict so long as I had permission from both of my instructors. I have chosen to miss my CLST lecture and attend my GPHY lecture where they conflict. My reasoning behind this is that there are three one hour CLST lectures that take place every week whereas there is only one two hour GPHY lecture. As well, I have friends in the CLST class who can catch me up on any material I miss on that day, whereas in GPHY I do not. Although I am waitlisted in CLST due to this conflict I have still been attending the Wednesday and Friday lectures so as to not fall behind. I initially thought that because I was 1st on the waitlist it would only be a matter of time before I was accepted, though I figured out it was due to the conflict. By the time I was informed of this by the academic counselor I was speaking with it was nearing the course add/drop deadline. I acknowledge that I should have been more proactive towards this, and sooner to act. Now that I am familiar with the process of bypassing the time conflict I will be better prepared for a similar situation in the future.

The CLST lecture I wish to enroll in is the same one I have been attending from the beginning of the semester. It is labeled as CLST 103, Lecture 3263. I have been given permission by both Professor Poletti of CLST 103, and Professor Stoley of GPHY 101 surrounding the conflict in my timetable. As for my academic plan; I have been attending the Wednesday and Friday lectures for CLST, and am on par with the current course material. As for the 8:30-9:30 CLST lecture time slot I will be missing on Tuesday, I have many friends in the class who can share their notes with me on that day which I believe will keep me caught up with the content I miss on that day.

If there is any extra information I can provide surrounding this I would be more than happy to. Having this course in my schedule is crucial to my academic journey at Queens and I would really appreciate it to be added to my schedule.

All the best,

Callan
