Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Dean,

I am writing to you today to request your understanding and assistance with a matter that deeply affected my academic performance last semester, specifically regarding my grade in the course CISC101.

The request I bring before you comes after a semester that was uniquely challenging, marked by a confluence of exceptional circumstances that significantly impeded my academic performance.

Returning to school after a four-year hiatus, (years where I had to do all kinds of odd jobs to get by in Canada while surviving the COVID-19 pandemic) was a far more challenging transition than I had envisioned. This period, which I had hoped would mark a positive return to my academic aspirations, instead tested my adaptability and resilience to an extent I had not previously experienced.

Additionally, my commitment to rowing, while not involving competitions last semester, required a substantial investment of time and effort. This commitment, deeply important to me on a personal level, unfortunately detracted from the time I could dedicate to my studies, compelling me to prioritize other courses more closely aligned with my major and future career goals.

This semester (Winter 2024), my challenges were compounded by an unexpected visa issue, forcing me to defer my studies to Fall 2024. This unforeseen complication has not only disrupted my academic trajectory but has also added to the strain of navigating my path towards academic success amidst these significant hurdles.

In light of these exceptional circumstances, I am respectfully requesting the removal of my grade for CISC101 from last semester. The grade I received, under these conditions, does not reflect my true academic ability or the level of effort I am committed to investing in my studies under more typical circumstances. It stands as a stark reminder of a particularly difficult period, rather than a true measure of my potential and dedication.

I understand the unprecedented nature of this request and am fully prepared to provide further information, documentation, or clarification as needed to substantiate my case. My aim is not to shirk responsibility but to seek a fair assessment of my academic performance, considering the challenges I faced.

Allowing me to move forward without the burden of this grade would not only alleviate the impact of an exceptionally challenging year but also enable me to approach my future studies with the focus and determination necessary for success.
