Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
Thank you for your time in reading this letter.
I am writing to appeal my midyear mark from CHEM 112 at Bader College, as I believe that the mark that I have received does not justify my academic performance in the course.
Firstly, given the circumstances at Bader College last term where we had to return to Canada, we have not received many of our assignment grades back as they were not posted on our OnQ. Additionally, I just received the breakdown of the course marks today after having received the midyear mark from Dr. Alaina Boyd. The area that I am confused about the most is our experiential learning bin. This bin is worth 20% of our mark, and I scored 14.6/20 (73%). From what I recall, there were two assignments that were a part of this: a written report based on our trip to Edinburgh and a soap creation lab. We have received neither of those grades back, and I believe that I performed well on both assignments given the time and efforts that I have dedicated to it, which is at least deserving of a higher mark than 73%. I was timely with the assignments and submitted them before the were due, and I recall Dr. Odukoya mentioning that the soap that was created in my second assignment had a good shape, which would fulfill a high level criteria on the rubric. Of course, this is not indicative of the overall mark of this assignment, however I could not point out any notable errors that would drastically decrease my grade. Additionally, for the first assignment which was a written report, on the day that we were scheduled for the experiential learning opportunity, 2 out of 3 of the places that we could go to in order to gather information were closed. Therefore, our resources were limited, however, I included all the criteria to score well based on the rubric, so I do not fully understand why this may have lowered my mark.
I would be happy to speak to Dr. Odukoya first about my grade and my hopes of having it changed based on my justifications, however, I emailed him regarding mark breakdowns and he has not responded. I understand that the situation at Bader College was also very difficult for our professors, but I just seek some clarification on why my mark in this bin is so low as I cannot discern it myself.
