Dear Dr. Stephenson,
Re: PHIL 204 Participation Grade Review
I am writing to request a review of the participation grade for PHIL 204. Under my Letter of Accommodation approved by Student Wellness Services, I am approved for permitted alternatives to class participation and in-class presentations. As we approached the end of this course, I contacted the instructor to remind them of a need to re-weight the class participation requirement. I offered several alternatives and informed the instructor they could choose the option that worked best for their workflow (such as a final reflection or a “shift” of the participation grade’s worth to the final paper).
The instructor contacted me and informed me there was a mistake with the participation grade, and I had scored two points higher than had initially been entered. This resulted in a participation grade of 6 out of a possible 10. Again, I informed the instructor that I had a full accommodation and simply assigning two additional points was not in accordance with my Letter of Accommodation. I did not hear back from the instructor and proceeded to contact QSAS. As this matter took place “at the end of the term”, the office informed me they had no way of investigating the matter.
Additionally, I had consistent challenges gaining lecture slides in advance of this class, which are also required under my Letter of Accommodation. Although I did have the support of my Department after raising an official objection, slides were still consistently delayed, on average, for 2-3 weeks after the conclusion of each lecture. In my view, this unreasonable delay negatively impacted my progress in PHIL 204.
For these reasons, I am requesting a formal re-weighting of my participation grade, as well as my final paper which was negatively impacted due to a lack of slides on the pertinent lesson (“Schopenhauer”).
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or require further information. QSAS has consistently refused to formally advocate on my behalf in this matter due to internal
policy; however, my Department may be willing to provide additional context should you require it.
Sincerely,
Jacob Reesor
