Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I hope this letter finds you well. I am petitioning to Late Drop CLST 103, and to receive Credit Standing for GPHY 101 and GNDS 125 during the Winter 2023 term.

During the Winter 2023 Term, I faced significant circumstances beyond my control, struggling through an abusive relationship and a mental health disorder that was undiagnosed at the time, which flared due to the abuse. While my performance overall was impacted, CLST 103, GPHY 101, and GNDS 125 were particularly difficult due to their group work components and heavy workloads. The difficulty was exacerbated by the commitment to six courses.

From the beginning of the winter semester, I was in a deep state of depression, Surviving through an abusive relationship and the challenges associated with my mental health disorder. The emotional strain and constant fear for my safety created an environment where academic performance became extremely difficult, and social engagement for academic purposes was nearly impossible. I was forced to stay in the relationship through extreme threats of violence. These conditions were worsened by my disorder, which constantly either put me in a fight/flight state of mind or a freeze response that would lead to many weeks of complete disassociation, meaning I was rarely, if ever emotionally/ mentally regulated. All of this led to a prolonged period full of nothing but fear, depression, and isolation throughout the whole term, making me unable to function properly, let alone perform well academically.

There are many reasons why I did not seek help sooner, including the partner manipulating and forcing me into isolation. Sharing these struggles with family was not an option, given the severe consequences of them finding out that I was even in a relationship. Parental pressure to complete six courses prevented me from dropping CLST 103 at that time.

I sincerely hope that you can consider my circumstances compassionately. They were beyond my control, and I was unable to access support at the time. I recently took steps towards improvement through professional support, leading to a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. Although the impairment is ongoing, I managed to escape from the abusive relationship with the assistance of Kingston Police. I have shown clear improvement since then, as evidenced by my grades during the summer semester and fall 2023. Through personal counselling and therapy, I have a plan for success moving forward. Please allow me to fulfill my utmost potential. Thank you for your time and understanding.

Sincerely,
Sirina Ibrahim
