Petition Letter: Dear Dean,
I am writing to formally request a leave of absence from Queens University for the 2024 Fall semester. I have carefully considered this decision and believe that it is in my best interest to further my education in Politics by studying abroad at a school in Paris, France.
As a student at Queens University, I have greatly valued the academic opportunities and resources provided. Queens has granted me opportunities to grow not only as a student but also as a person. However, I am eager to expand my understanding of global politics and immerse myself in a different cultural and educational environment. Paris is known for its rich political history and international community. Attending school there presents a fantastic opportunity for me to engage with diverse perspectives and deepen my understanding of International politics.
Studying abroad in Paris will allow me to access unique educational opportunities that are not available at Queens University. I am particularly drawn to the courses offered by Cea Capa Paris. The courses I am hoping to take are French Civilization and Culture, Media and Democracy in a Digital Age, Current Political Issues in France, and Communication and Global Competence.
These courses grant me the opportunity to learn about politics on a global scale and gain a deeper understanding of the world of politics. These courses also align perfectly with my academic plan of studying politics. I plan to go in the fall so I can take the mandatory Pols 350 in the spring and take Pols 384 in the fall of my fourth year. Going abroad for the fall 2024 semester will allow the opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture and the chance to attend international field trips will help me further my understanding of politics to a global scale. France, just like much of Europe, is experiencing a new wave of politics with a growth in new ideals surrounding democracy. Being in France will expand my knowledge of what is happening in Europe from a political perspective. This is what I am passionate about and being able to learn and expand my understanding of politics on a global scale will be highly beneficial to both my academic and professional career.
Attending university in a different country like France provides a different perspective on how you are taught and the policies and beliefs of another group of individuals. With respect to my learning in politics, I feel that learning abroad will allow me the opportunity to see how other countries deal with their political agendas, the beliefs of the people, the favorable policies they have in place as well as the ones that are not benefiting the country. Seeing how the French interact in a political way will be extremely beneficial to my learning and future of study moving forward. It will allow me to take what I learn and apply it to the world around me. Being in a new setting allows for multiple opportunities to learn and expand my knowledge of the world around me making me a more well rounded individual.
I assure you that I am committed to maintaining academic excellence during my time abroad. I have thoroughly researched the courses I plan to take at Cea Capa and they align perfectly with my Politics degree at Queen's University. The opportunity will assist in my academic growth as I will be able to gain different perspectives, but it will also be a step forward with my goals later on in life. My goal is to attend grad school and this opportunity will enable my opportunity to attend. I plan to take advantage of every resource the school offers to ensure I am reaching my full potential and making the most out of the opportunity to study in paris.
I am happy to do anything necessary to ensure my semester abroad goes smoothly. I am more than willing to meet with you to discuss my plans in further detail and address any concerns you may have. Below, you will also see approval from my head of department, professor Hanniman, which states his support for my study abroad.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: As stated above, this opportunity aligns perfectly with my goal of studying politics at Queens. I plan on being extremely committed to academic excellence while studying in Paris. I plan to take advantage of every possible resource to ensure I get the support needed and maintain academic excellence. My plan for studying Politics at Queens aligns with my desire to study abroad. So far I have taken all the courses necessary for my degree at Queens. My desire to go in the Fall allows me to be present for the mandatory Pols 350 in the Spring. I also plan to take the other mandatory course, Pols 384, in Fall 2025. While abroad, I will study French Civilization and Culture, Media and Democracy in a Digital Age, Current Political Issues in France, and Communication and Global Competence. These courses fit my academic plan and have been reviewed by my head of department, professor Hanimann.
With that said, there are only four courses I plan to take while abroad, but I plan on taking six courses when I return to Queens in the Spring to ensure I meet my requirements. I will ensure that I am focused and driven to achieve academic excellence while abroad. I plan to continue to meet with my tutor while away to ensure my writing is solid. I also plan to continue to meet and talk with both teachers and classmates to further understand the material. By putting these plans in place I will be able to continue solid academic work while abroad. The courses I plan to take will align with my degree, allowing me to expand my knowledge of global politics while also aligning with my educational plan.
I am a driven, hard working student who has a desire to do well in school. This will not change when I'm studying abroad. I am certain I will come back to Queens a well rounded hard working student just like I am now. I am happy to discuss my plan further if there is any concern. Thank you.
