To Whom It May Concern],
I am writing to petition for a reconsideration of my academic performance during the summer of 2023. The circumstances surrounding this period were tumultuous, marked by a profoundly distressing event that deeply impacted my mental health and academic pursuits.
During the beginning of the summer of 2023, while I was away on a mission trip in Ecuador, I received devastating news regarding my father's well-being. He had attempted to take his own life by ingesting bleach. The sheer shock and helplessness I experienced upon learning of this event while being thousands of miles away from home cannot be overstated. Seeing someone I have looked up to as the strongest pillar in my life succumb to such despair and anguish left me shattered and overwhelmed with a sense of powerlessness.
The emotional toll of witnessing my father's struggle with his mental health while feeling incapacitated to provide immediate support compounded my own pre-existing mental health challenges. The experience magnified the symptoms of my undiagnosed Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), plunging me into a state of profound distress and instability.
It was in the wake of this harrowing event that I realized the urgent need for professional help. Recognizing the detrimental impact of suppressing my own mental health needs, I made the courageous decision to seek therapeutic intervention. However, due to scheduling constraints and the process of diagnosis, it took several weeks to finalize therapy sessions and confirm my mental health diagnoses. Regrettably, this delay meant that a significant portion of the semester had already passed before I could fully engage in therapeutic support.
Though I endeavored to maintain my academic commitments amidst the turmoil, the weight of the circumstances I faced proved to be overwhelming. The intensity of the biochemistry course, coupled with the profound emotional distress stemming from my father's ordeal, hindered my ability to perform at my fullest potential academically during this period.
I humbly request that you reconsider my academic performance during the specified period, taking into account the gravity of the extenuating circumstances that profoundly impacted my mental health and academic endeavors.
Thank you for your understanding and consideration of my request. I am hopeful for a fair assessment that acknowledges the significant challenges I faced and the strides I have made towards personal growth and academic improvement.
Sincerely, Amrit Binnning.
