Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am writing to petition for Request credit (CR) standing in POLS 211, which I took in the summer of 2021. It is only recently that I have become aware of the option to petition for this. Had I known about this possibility earlier, I would have taken immediate action to address my academic concerns. Therefore, I would also like to request to waive the petition deadline.

It is with deep regret that I must inform you of the circumstances that have impacted my academic performance. Unfortunately, my mom was diagnosed with cancer in January of 2021. At the time, it was unclear how serious her condition was and what treatment options would be available to her. It was not until a few months later until she underwent surgery and began her chemotherapy treatment.

As her primary caregiver and emotional support during this challenging time, I found it increasingly difficult to focus on my studies and maintain the academic standards to which I would have liked. The emotional toll of witnessing my mother's struggle with cancer, coupled with the demands of managing her medical appointments and providing care, significantly impacted my ability to devote sufficient time and energy to my studies.

The grade I received in POLS 211 doesn't reflect my true academic abilities. I'm confident that, under normal circumstances, I would have performed much better in this course. However, the challenging circumstances surrounding my mother's illness significantly impacted my focus and performance during that time.

Given the circumstances outlined above, I respectfully request your consideration in granting Request credit (CR) standing for POLS 211. Additionally, I seek your understanding in waiving the petition deadline, as I was previously unaware of this option and would have acted promptly had I known.

I understand that the decision regarding my petition lies within your discretion, and I sincerely hope for a favorable resolution to my request.
