Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,

I am writing to respectfully request consideration for Aegrotat (AG) standing for my Fall/Winter courses: MATH 121, CHEM 112, PHYS 104, and Winter course: BIOL 103, along with a Credit (CR) standing for my Fall course: BIOL 102. This petition is submitted under the grounds of severe personal extenuating circumstances that have notably impacted my academic performance.

In late March 2024, I experienced a deeply unsettling incident of Voyeurism within my residence. This violation of privacy led to significant psychological distress, affecting my ability to concentrate and fully engage with my studies. The pervasive nature of this trauma was exacerbated by the environment in which it occurred—my place of residence, which should have been a safe space. The ongoing investigation and related disruptions continued to affect me throughout the academic term, leading to difficulties in managing my coursework effectively, particularly in the courses for which I am requesting Aegrotat standing.

Additionally, my academic performance in BIOL 102 was adversely affected by an incident during the final examination in December 2023, where the assigned proctor engaged in behaviour that was both intimidating and harassing. This unprofessional conduct created an environment not conducive to demonstrating my understanding of the material, leading to a performance that was not reflective of my capabilities.
In response to these challenges, I took proactive steps to manage my circumstances, including consultations with mental health professionals and seeking support through university counselling services. These measures were crucial in helping me to cope with the immediate effects of the incidents, and I continue to engage with these resources to support my ongoing recovery.

The impact of these events on my academic work was significant. I found myself unable to perform at my usual standard across the aforementioned courses, specifically during periods of heightened stress resulting from these incidents. Assignments were submitted late, and my exam preparations were severely hindered, directly correlating with the timing of the aforementioned events.
Given these circumstances, I kindly request that the university consider my petition for Aegrotat and Credit standings for the respective courses mentioned. I have included supporting documents from my healthcare providers and am willing to provide further evidence or participate in discussions should the university require.
