Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Hello to all concerned,

I am writing this petition based on a failing grade in this course. I achieved a 48% final mark. However, this mark was with a missed test worth 15% that was open online for one day, and a missed assignment deadline worth 5% of the final grade. The reason for missing these deadlines was based on the fact that I have had a lot of personal and familial circumstances going on around me. This has caused me to have to travel back and forth from Toronto to Kingston. I have also attended a personal counselor a few times this semester to aid my situation. These circumstances have caused me to have a lot of misjudgments in my scheduling due to having to deal with a lot. I was hoping and attempted to see what I could do to gain this 2% missing from a passing grade in many ways. One way was suggesting to redo an assignment that I was granted a 51% on. The reason is that this assignment had feedback checkpoints and the feedback I received told me that I was on the right track and only suggested a few tweaks and clean-ups. With the feedback given, I assumed I was on the right track and finished my final copy doing the same things as my rough draft. If I had known I was on pace to barely pass the assessment I would have changed my approach. If I had even succeeded a 57% on this assignment I would have passed the course. I am requesting a re-grade for this final assignment, as I feel I was more deserving of a grade higher than a 51.

Furthermore, I feel that I shouldn’t have to explain personal problems to get a fair opportunity. This means that I was not granted an opportunity based on assumptions that I was just being careless and didn’t try hard this semester. Those are unfair assumptions to not let me attempt to show more of my course understanding. I am distraught with the decision to fail me when I was attempting to do anything for the extra credits. I am aware and understand the fact that professors have a heavy enough workload to not have to deal with things like this. However, I feel that the standard is unfair since missed deadlines happen all the time and many are granted the opportunity to make up for it. I was willing to try and make immense with my several mistakes, but did not get a chance.

I am asking if I can do anything to get a 2% grade bump or not a failing mark appears on my transcript as I am already dealing with a lot that has had an impact on my academics. Furthermore, I am a little concerned that no compromise at all was able to be reached when a student and professor were just simply talking about their mark. I feel that I was deserving of opportunities that I did not get. This affects me personally and academically in a massive way, and the stress and anxiety put on me trying to do anything to reason with he professor is taking a toll on me. I cannot drop these credits, as I am in 4th year and nearly done.
