Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

I am writing to respectfully request the withdrawal from CISC 499, DEVS 220, and CISC 455, which I was enrolled in during the Fall 2023 and Winter 2024 terms respectively. This request is due to significant extenuating circumstances that adversely impacted my academic performance and well-being.

Starting later in the fall semester, my mother became very ill, necessitating frequent travel between Ottawa and Kingston to assist her around the house and accompany her to hospital appointments. This situation placed a substantial burden on me, not only disrupting my academic schedule but also significantly affecting my mental and physical health. The requirement to manage increased family responsibilities, coupled with the stress and physical toll of travel, led to a deterioration in my eating habits and overall self-care, directly affecting my academic capabilities.

In the fall, as I was trying to process everything and had limited support, I missed several assessment submissions. Despite having a verification of extenuating circumstances in place, there was often limited flexibility offered for making up missed work due to specific course delivery. For example, in-person tests missed in the winter term could not be rescheduled, and for my DEVS 200 course, the instructors indicated that due to the collaborative nature of discussion board posts, makeup assignments was not feasible.
