Petition Letter: Dear Members of the Petitions Committee,
I am writing to respectfully request a withdrawal from CISC121, which I was enrolled in during the Winter, 2024. This petition is rooted in significant and unforeseen disruptions linked to my academic transfer from Bader College in the UK back to Queen's main campus. These disruptions have had a profound effect on my mental health and, consequently, my academic performance.
In 2023, I was thrilled to commence my studies at Bader College, a setting I deemed supportive and conducive given my history of social anxiety. This unique environment allowed me the necessary comfort and gradual adaptation I needed, given the small, closely-knit community and the familiar academic structure. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, Bader College was closed, necessitating an abrupt transfer back to the main campus.
The sudden relocation was highly disruptive. Transitioning to a larger, more impersonal environment at Queen's main campus significantly exacerbated my anxiety. Historically, I have struggled with social anxiety since childhood, necessitating extended periods to adjust to new environments and social contexts. The rapid change deprived me of the opportunity to adapt progressively, plunging me into an environment where forming new social connections for academic and personal support was daunting.
This isolation was compounded by the differences in academic delivery between the two campuses. Lectures at the main campus were conducted in a markedly different manner from what I had grown accustomed to at Bader College. The teaching methods and course expectations at Queen's main campus were not only unfamiliar but also more challenging to follow due to my heightened anxiety and lack of immediate academic support, such as study groups or classmates familiar with my situation.
The effects of these changes on my academic performance were immediate and severe. My coursework and examination performances during the winter semester are not reflective of my true capabilities but are rather indicative of the adverse conditions under which I was studying.
Given these circumstances, I believe my academic performance during the affected semester does not accurately reflect my potential and is directly attributable to the extenuating circumstances described. I am petitioning for a withdrawal from the course with a consideration that this will not impact my academic transcript negatively.
I am committed to my academic career and am taking proactive steps to ensure my well-being and academic success in future semesters. These include ongoing counseling, engagement with support groups on campus, and a structured plan to adapt more healthily to the main campus environment.
Thank you for considering this petition. I am hopeful for a favorable response and am willing to provide any additional information needed to support my case.
