Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I have found myself in a difficult situation. As hard as it is to admit that I could not fully academically apply myself in the last semester of school, it is true. In late March my parents were experiencing a hard month on their marriage, being an only child, you can imagine the impact their relationship has on my own mental health. In April, the question of divorce was approached, although nothing was set in stone, I was met daily with phone calls from my mother about my father, and my father about my mother. It was an endless cycle of these dreading calls, which ultimately impacted how I lived through every day. I had no other option but to block out my parents in attempt to find peace of mind, which only made it worse. It became noticeable in my marks even when I studied as much as I was originally, my head was not clear enough to perform exceptionably. The question for exam deferrals never crossed my mind as I am a proud academic, and continue to struggle with asking for help. But, I figured that it was time to admit that my home struggles were impacting my academics. Additionally, specific to chemistry, I took grade 12 chemistry in grade 11, meaning starting September I hadn't done chemistry work for over a year. This set me behind the majority of my classmates, it required extra effort and studying to get the bare minimum of my goals in the class, finally in second semester I started seeing improvement in my grades and lab reports in that particular class, but due to the circumstances in March and April, I was unable to incorporate that extra time studying due to my mental state, resulting in a poor grade in the class. I hope that my professors can understand how my grades were impacted because of personal issues, and if there was anything they could due to adjust my grades I would appreciate it very much.
