Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am writing to petition to appeal the deadline (1 year) for my Academic Petition.

I did not submit a petition within the one year required timeline because I was highly invested in student life at Queens and extracurricular activities, so during the year, it was difficult for me to focus on anything on top of that. For example, I was in a band that played in Kingston bars on Thursdays, was a part of the VOGUE student charity fashion show and club, and was part of intramural sports. On top of this, I was the marketing director of the first Queen's Conference in Business and Governance. This meant that as soon as courses ended and it was the beginning of the summer of 2023, I worked extremely hard with all of the founders to set the conference up in November and begin the marketing process. With school and club activities bleeding into the summer, I was also applying to work at a law firm (JGC Family Law). This meant that during the Winter 2023 Term, I was working on these rigorous applications, and beginning in May, I was working hard after hours day in and day out. It was hard even to consider completing an application to appeal a grade when I was at work. Moving into my final year was also difficult. I still had many course requirements to complete, and taking all these required courses at once during my final year was challenging. Moreover, I was taking a summer course, so it was complicated to manage my time in the summer.

The supporting documentation request id's will support the statement that my health condition was reoccurring and of the same nature during each consideration period. The lung issues I was facing were recurrent and required both short-term and long-term consideration requests. Aside from my long-term request, even one short-term request put me behind in school, and it was challenging to manage my course load. Throughout the year, I faced several health events. Currently, I need help accessing the short-term and long-term academic consideration submissions, and I may have deleted the supporting documentation from my computer after the submissions were successfully completed. In Winter 2023, I had a short-term request for my asthma (request id: 40989), in Fall 2023 I had a short-term request also for my asthma (request id: 49038) and long-term request because the condition exacerbated (request id: 49843). These affected my ability to complete school work and submit an application to appeal my grade. Finally, in Winter 2024, I had both short-term (request id: 51634) and long-term (request id: 55454) requests, which affected my ability to both complete school work and appeal the deadline.

Finally, there was a change in circumstances and understanding of my course requirements. It was not until I was communicating with my professor and students in my philosophy class that I learned I did not need Logic as a course requirement, and I did not need to take the course. Learning this made me want to appeal the grade even more, because I was taking a difficult course that an academic advisor told me I needed to take, for no reason. I was told this information by a peer in PPP who is in the club QCBG, and he can confirm, if needed that I had no idea I did not need to take this course until he told me in December 2023. By this time, I was busy applying for post grad and interning for a new work position this summer, so creating an appeal was out of question at this time. I was planning to submit the appeal in Winter 2024 and discuss my options by the end of the school year, but again I was forced to submit short-term and long-term academic consideration applications in March and April during exams, and was swamped with work. Furthermore, I wanted to wait until my marks from my entire 4 years at Queen's were submitted to assess whether a Credit Standing (CR) was needed for my Logic grade, and whether the original grade would significantly impact my GPA for post-grad. Then, because of my long-term academic consideration, I was still waiting on my PHIL 420 mark to be submitted late and unable to submit the petition both because the PHIL 420 mark was not submitted, and because I faced academic consideration and already began my busy Job for the summer. If you have any recommendations for documents to submit I can definitely do so, I just don't know what documents I should attach to this petition, and I am open to more correspondence. This issue and grade is extremely important to me. I can ask my friend to testify for me that it was not until December that I learned I did not need Logic as a core course, and my other petition has a record of the document I was working on, which shows I was led by an Academic Advisor to believe I needed to take Logic as a core course. The result of taking this course was impacted by my grades and GPA, and I faced both ill advisement and academic consideration during that term.
