Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am petitioning to drop ECON 111 (Winter, 2024) and IDIS 173 (Winter, 2024). During the past winter term, I experienced unforeseen extenuating circumstances in first-year residence that compromised my mental health state which inhibited me from performing properly in classes. I have been living with chronic anxiety depression and ADHD and have been medicated for the past two years. In November of 2023, I moved to a single-plus residence where I shared a wall and bathroom with another individual. The time frame of my extenuating mental health circumstance was when I first moved into Leggett Hall residence in November to the end of April when I had finished my exams. During that time frame, I had to share a wall with my can-mate who would wake me up from 2:00 am to 5:00 am on a near daily basis due to noise inhibiting my ability to sleep. This in turn exacerbated my focus levels regarding my ADHD and I became extremely depressed due to a lack of sleep and my chronic diagnosed depression. This in turn caused me to perform very low in a lot of my courses with this unfair circumstance as I was constantly interrupted and was not able to do my very best when unforeseen problems disturbed my sleep. I had notified the don on call and my floor don about this issue and every time I was told that something was being done to fix this problem but nothing changed over almost six months which I also is unfair as I had specifically moved to a single residence to perform better in classes with a private space. I was not able to drop these courses earlier as I was hoping I would be able to perform well in these classes even with disturbances and I didn’t see my overall GPA as a problem in the future in terms of my academic performance. However, at this present moment, I am trying to transfer schools and I need to meet a minimum GPA requirement to transfer. ECON 111 and IDIS 173 are both courses that I do not require and are unrelated to my future studies as I am moving forward with focusing my studies on art history. In terms of my plan for the future, I will have a different living situation so no more disturbances to my studies can occur. I will also be visiting my doctor this summer and will be discussing this matter to find solutions to be able to cope with my condition and learn strategies to help combat similar situations to this one. Hope that all makes sense and have a relaxing summer!
