Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I am writing to provide additional details regarding the special circumstances that have impacted my academic standing and to seek the school's understanding and support for my leave of absence appeal. I hope that by sharing the specific challenges I have faced during my studies, the school will have a more comprehensive understanding of my situation and reconsider my leave of absence request. My poor academic standing is due to my health condition.
Earlier this year, I was diagnosed with diabetes. I am currently receiving treatment in China, and my condition is gradually stabilizing. However, when my symptoms first appeared, I did not understand that they were related to diabetes. I experienced various health issues such as vomiting, loss of appetite, and other symptoms. I mistakenly attributed these issues to gastrointestinal problems rather than diabetes, and therefore, I did not communicate these issues to the school in a timely manner.
My health condition has also had a significant impact on my mental well-being. I tend to be reluctant to seek help from others, and combined with my lack of awareness about my illness, I did not inform the school about my situation. Despite these challenges, I have had to visit the emergency room and have been hospitalized due to my diabetes. After being diagnosed with diabetes, my emotions took a downturn. I became very negative about everything, resistant, and unwilling to socialize. Even seemingly simple tasks like attending classes regularly became challenging for me. I not only have to deal with physical issues but also overcome psychological hurdles. In this state, even the most basic daily activities have become difficult.
I hope that the school can take these special circumstances into consideration and support my request for a leave of absence. Thank you for your understanding and consideration.
Here is a detailed timeline of my illness and its impact on my studies:
**Early March:**
My condition worsened, and I could only eat vegetables. I was constantly drowsy. I had to attend chemistry lab and biology lab tutorials every Thursday, but I started finding it difficult to attend these tutorials due to my drowsiness. Despite this, I pushed myself to go to every session, knowing how crucial these labs were for my education. I would take short naps whenever possible to manage my energy levels. I also made sure to prepare as much as I could in advance, so I could keep up even when I felt exhausted.
** 11-12th March:**
My condition further deteriorated, leading to pancreatic necrosis. I vomited everything I ate and was dehydrated almost every day.
**23-26th March:**
My condition became very serious, and I was hospitalised for a week. Prior to this, I had been vomiting and thought it was a gastrointestinal issue. I took Pepto, but it didn't help. Since I had a history of stomach issues, I thought it was a recurrence.
It wasn't until my blood sugar reached 35, and I was taken to the emergency room for treatment, that I realised the seriousness of my health condition. During my hospitalisation, I couldn't eat much other than vegetables and was constantly drowsy.
The impact on my studies due to this hospitalisation and health reasons:
I missed the term test and the third test for my math class.
I missed the assignment submission deadline for MATH111.
My biomidterm exam results were poor.
I need to explain that before being diagnosed during my hospitalisation, I thought I had gastroenteritis, so I was embarrassed to submit a Special Consideration (SC) request. I only applied for SC for the CISC102. If you need proof, I can provide it.
**Early April:**
I visited the Diabetes Clinic at Hotel Diem Hospital site. They told me to return for a follow-up every two weeks, but I did not go back on time because I didn't like visiting hospitals every time just to check if I am ok without prescribed medication.
Diabetes also brings about many complications and a decline in my bodily functions. For example, my eyesight became blurry, affecting my performance in the mid-term exams, some of which remained incomplete due to this blurriness. As a result, I failed three laboratory courses, couldn't complete the term test for mathematics, and left the second part of the final project unfinished. Additionally, at the end of last year, my grandmother experienced severe bleeding due to spinal compression caused by hypertension, requiring emergency surgery and 3000 milliliters of blood transfusion to save her. She subsequently suffered from high-level paralysis. Consequently, my mood has been low since the end of last year. Furthermore, I have previously experienced severe diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I have returned to China and received a confirmed diagnosis of my condition. After undergoing extensive treatment and regular check-ups, my health has improved. Specifically, my follow-up results indicate that my pancreatic function has recovered by 50%. Although I still require insulin injections three times a day and regular medication, my overall condition has significantly improved.
During the treatment, doctors have confirmed that I will no longer experience the severe symptoms such as vomiting that previously affected my academic performance. While I still need to adhere to treatment and regular check-ups, my condition is now manageable, giving me confidence to continue my studies and fulfill academic requirements.
I hope the school will consider my special circumstances and provide me with the opportunity to continue my studies. I value my time at the university greatly and am willing to exert extra effort to succeed.
I have started regular therapy sessions to address emotional issues and cultivate healthy habits. Regular therapy aims to improve my mental health, reduce anxiety and depression levels, and enhance my focus on academic tasks. Moreover, I recognize the importance of early communication with professors or the school about any emotional or physical concerns to prevent them from escalating.
