Petition Letter: Dear Academic Associate Dean
I am writing this letter to ask for a reconsideration of the decision to withdrawal me from the faculty of Art and Science for 1 year.
On May 26th I received an email indicating that I was to withdrawal from the faculty of Art and Science for one year. This is because I have failed to achieve the cumulative GPA of a 0.7 during my first year. Following a meeting with my academic advisor it became clear to me that many factors beyond my control have impacted my ability to succeed in my studies. I believe the faculty should be aware of my circumstance in order to make a fair and informed decision.
I was a good academic standing student before coming to university. Unfortunately, when I entered the university, I realized the high tuition as an international student and this was a great pressure on me. Also, the language transition from High school level to University level overwhelmed me and deteriorated my circumstances. I was unable to fit in University as socially and academically these started to feel isolated from the university and my focus was heavily clouded because of this suffocating situation. This mental stress was totally a new experience that I have never dealt in my life.
Although the previous academic year was an exceptional one for me I am pursing a second chance in the Faculty as an opportunity to improve myself. After diagnosing myself, I have set a firm academic plan so that the problems I faced during my first year will most likely not reoccur in the future.
I believe that the Faculty should give me a chance to pursue, especially considering the fact that I suffered from extenuating circumstances as an international student, and it was beyond my control. In addition, hoping to aware that I do have a firm academic plan to success in the future that I set my goal majoring in Applied economic. I sincerely hope your help and support to make my efforts worth it as full time student.
Sincerely,
Yeonju Kim

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: First of all, I have chosen my degree program to study based on my interest and my passion. Before coming to university, I was not sure about my future plan. This became myself having lack of motivation to study in first year. Now, I have set my goal majoring in Economics. This is because I have a passion in learning about the market, seeking to describe the factors which determine the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. With my firm goal to succeed as an economic student, I have regained my motivation to study. I am planning to take the pre requisite courses again with a good academic standing not just fulfilling the criteria to enter the program. Since I have regained my motivation and have a goal oriented mindset, I am confident to promise you that I would be a successful student in Economics program in the future.
To be specific, I am planning to raise my GPA by retaking the course I have not passed. This current summer term, I am going to raise my GPA up to 1.0. I am currently taking a mathematics this summer academic year. I am putting substantial effort towards this course such as watching every single lecture videos and actively participating the course discussion. With these effort I confident in obtaining at least the grade of B+ in this course. I am further going to re-take ECON 110, DEVS100, PSYC100 to raise my GPA.
I have found numerous resource to relive my stress. I was not very well aware of these resources provided from the Queen¿¿s University. In previous times, I doubted the resources listed in my first year handbook. However, after visiting the writing centre and other resource in campus, I definitely believe that it helps me. So far, to improve my English language, I have visited the writing centre and met the ESL Program Coordinator. I have gotten several assessments and advises in terms of my English writings.
As an international student, I have been faced numerous challenges while studying and living in Canada alone. Like the storm makes the tree stronger, I have been improved through this experience by always seeking to improve and putting continuous effort. Again, I am sincerely asking your support and help to continue my studies as a full time student.
Thank you,
Yeonju Kim
