Academic Appeal Committee

Kingston, ON 2K7L 3N6

Dear Jenn Stephenson,

I am writing to formally appeal my academic standing withdrawal effective May 1 2024, as outlined in the withdrawal notice dated May 24, 2024. Due to significant financial burdens and responsibilities resulting from being raised by a single, widowed mother, I faced substantial challenges that severely impacted my academic performance.
After my father's passing in 2016, my mother has been the sole provider for our family. Recently, she returned to school to improve our financial situation, which has placed additional strain on our already limited resources. The stress and pressure became a distraction from my obligations and priorities, significantly hindering my ability to focus on my coursework, leading to my current academic standing.

The emotional stress of coping with financial instability, along with the added responsibilities and pressure at home greatly affected my ability to concentrate on my studies. As a result, I found myself feeling depressed, comparing my situation to my peers and struggling to find motivation to manage my time effectively, falling behind in my coursework, which ultimately led to failing grades in my Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, and Calculus classes. Specifically, these challenges affected my performance throughout the Spring 2024 semester, with the most significant impact occurring from January to April 2024.

With these difficulties, I did not take action to address my situation. Although I knew greatly of the counseling services Queen’s provides and advocates for, which help better manage stress and students schedules, I thought I was supposed to do this all by myself. I have now consulted with academic advisors to develop a realistic academic plan, along with reconnecting in my volunteer work with children experiencing grief. My further research includes a goal to attend workshops on time management and seeking ongoing counseling support I need.

Attached to this letter are documents that provide further context and evidence of my situation. To ensure my future success, I have developed a realistic academic plan, following the guidelines provided in the

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: To ensure my future success is my top priority, I have developed this academic plan taking Queen’s university’s academic success services into consideration:
Reduced Course Load: I will take a lighter course load during my first semester back to allow more time to focus on each subject I am truly passionate about and ensure I can manage my responsibilities effectively. Specifically, I plan to enroll in no more than 4 courses per term initially, and enrolling in summer courses. Along with a reflection on my past year, and confronting which subjects I not only deserve to be in, but want to be in. Putting my academic pathway’s goals first, even if it doesn’t align with my peers.
Time Management Workshops: I know Queen’s University offered a time management workshop January 2023, through SASS. After further research I learned joining the Student Academic Success Services (SASS) workshops can provide immediate benefits such as improved study skills and focused support on specific academic challenges. I want to learn more about what SASS offers, and how I can be a part of it. By gaining confidence and connecting with other students, I would be able to be in a supportive community and potential study partnerships, improving my ability to balance academic and personal responsibilities.
Regular Counseling Sessions: I have reached out to a women's clinic near me to discuss restarting regular sessions with a counselor to manage my stress, my grief and overall maintain my mental health. Through this I will continue to learn that my grief is a part of me and I can better handle my future challenges.
Tutoring Services: I will utilize tutoring services for difficult courses to ensure I understand the material thoroughly and keep up with assignments, as I now know reaching out for help is not something to be ashamed of.
Regular Meetings with Academic Advisors: I will schedule regular meetings with academic advisors to monitor my progress, my pathways, and make adjustments to my academic plan as needed. This will help me stay on track and address any issues promptly.
I am confident that these steps will enable me to overcome my past challenges and succeed in my future studies. I am committed to making the necessary changes to ensure my academic success and to fully utilize the resources available to me at Queen's University.
I am truly grateful for the committee considering my appeal and granting me the opportunity to take responsibility for my mistakes.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Isabella Maya Regalado Garrido
