Petition Letter: Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Kaiwen Xiao, and my student ID is 20357663. I’m a year-2 student from Art and Science, and my major is Mathematics. I am writing this letter to appeal the decision I received on May 1st regarding my 12-month suspension from Queen's University Canada. I would like to state my special situation in my personal statement, and I wish I could be allowed to return to the University to continue my bachelor study in 2024 Fall or 2025 Winter. I hope that the university could understand my experience, review my case and grant my approved.

Background:

My parents worked in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China and gave birth to me there. My parents were too busy with work and did not have enough time to take care of me at a young age, so my grandparents took me back to Shandong. I grew up with my grandparents and had a very happy childhood. Because of our long relationship, my grandparents and I shared a very deep bond.

In August 2024, I returned to China to visit my grandparents during the summer holidays. During the summer holidays I went back to Qingdao, Shandong Province, China to see my Grandma, who was living in a rural village in the mountains in very simple living conditions. My Grandma's health was very poor and she suffered from leg pains all the time, especially on rainy days. My father said he would build Grandma a new house, and Grandma was very happy. I have been videoing with Grandma since I came to Canada to go to school.

What Happened:

In January 2024, I received a call from home. My grandpa had passed away. I didn't know how to face the reality of his death. I felt extremely sad and couldn't sleep all night. I could only stare at my phone, trying to distract myself from the overwhelming emotions. After my grandpa's passing, I couldn't focus on my studies. I was very depressed, and the irregular lifestyle caused by insomnia, combined with the cold Canadian winter, made me feel like my life was in chaos and devoid of sunlight. I spent my days waiting for my father's call, even though I knew he didn't want to talk much about my grandpa. After a few days, I was on the verge of a breakdown; the news of my grandpa's death had come so suddenly, and it hit me hard. This had a significant impact on my studies and life. My girlfriend constantly encouraged me to stay strong, telling me that my grandpa would want me to take care of myself, live well, and work hard on my studies abroad. With my grandpa's expectations and my girlfriend's encouragement and support, I gradually emerged from the sadness, started to recover my state of mind, and immersed myself in my studies, hoping to improve my life.

My father told me that before my grandpa passed away, he had a wish to see my girlfriend again. My girlfriend had met my family before, and we had dinner together. My grandpa had a very good impression of her and liked her very much. However, due to my studies in Canada and the inconvenience of returning when my grandpa passed away, I couldn't fulfill his last wish, which has been a regret for my family and me.
