Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to formally petition to waive the requirement to withdraw for one year. During this past term, I experienced extenuating circumstances that significantly impacted my academic performance during the Winter 2024 Term. I sincerely hope that you will consider my situation with empathy and understanding.
I recently submitted a petition to late drop my courses from the Winter 2023 term, and I am grateful for the faculty’s decision to grant my request. Throughout the past academic year, I have actively addressed my challenges and worked to improve my situation. Unfortunately, due to issues with my landlord and property management company, I encountered substantial difficulties during the Winter 2024 Term. These challenges not only affected my mental health but also hindered my ability to perform my academic duties to the best of my abilities.
In December 2023, Axon, my property management company, presented me with two lease renewal options: either sign a new lease with a 10% rent increase or agree to sign both a lease amendment and an N11 form to terminate my tenancy after one year.
Between January and March, I sought advice from multiple off-campus living advisors to determine if Axon’s ultimatum was legally enforceable. Unfortunately, they were unable to provide clear legal guidance and recommended that I consult Queen’s Legal Aid. Despite considering the option of moving out instead of renewing the lease, it was not financially feasible for me at the time. In March, Axon pressured me to sign the N11 and amendment agreement within 48 hours, leaving me no opportunity to consult with Queen’s Legal Aid. Additionally, a last-minute decision by my roommate to move out without disclosure further complicated the lease renewal process.
Privately, my mother spoke with a lawyer who confirmed that Axon’s demands were legally unenforceable, and it was illegal to pressure us in the way that they were. As such, we were able to navigate communication with Axon and renew our lease under the Standard Guidelines in Ontario, and Axon cannot legally force me to end my tenancy. We also found replacement roommates within the same week and were able to sign them on to our lease.
Undergoing this period of instability and uncertainty was incredibly challenging for me. Balancing the demands of my academic duties while navigating the stress of finding roommates, especially near the exam period, took a toll on both my mental and physical health. Unfortunately, the exacerbation of my PCOS and Endometriosis symptoms likely contributed to the decline in my academic performance this term.
However, I have actively worked to improve my physical and mental well-being, as well as enhance my academic performance throughout the year. After retaking BIOL103 in an online format, I achieved significantly better grades and discovered a passion for the field of biology. I aspire to enroll in Biology as my major and pursue additional courses that captivate my interest, allowing me to continue in this field in the future.
Moreover, I’ve been receiving assistance from a counsellor at Student Wellness Services throughout the year. They’ve helped me navigate these challenges and connected me with various resources, including QSAS. Implementing a long-term accommodation plan through QSAS has significantly improved my ability to manage my course load. Additionally, I am consulting specialists to adhere to a treatment plan that alleviates and helps me cope with my PCOS and endometriosis symptoms. I have also been connected to EmpowerMe and BeyondADHD to address my mental health and enhance my academic performance. Accessing financial aid through OSAP and securing summer job opportunities further supports my commitment to success.
I understand the incredible commitment and privilege it is to pursue a post secondary education, and in light of these circumstances and my commitment to academic success, I kindly request that the Faculty consider waiving the requirement to withdraw for one year . Your understanding and support in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to review my petition. I am hopeful for a positive resolution that acknowledges the challenges I have faced and the progress I am making towards a brighter academic future.
Sincerely,
Izza Raza
