Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean Johanne Bénard,
I am writing to appeal my requirement to withdraw from Queen¿¿s University for 3 years as stated by Queen¿¿s University Academic Regulation 20cii, and due to extenuating circumstances out of my control.
In the academic year of 2014-2015, I started with 3 courses in the fall and 3 courses in the winter. I dropped 1 courses in the winter because of my optimal carrying capacity. As my transcript shows, I achieved a pass in Art History (Arth) courses Arth 226 with a C, Arth 214 with a C, and Pharmacology 100 with a B-, but I failed Psychology 100. I am appealing to Academic Regulation 20cii, for a lesser penalty; such as remaining in academic probation for 2015-2016; because I was able to achieve 60 percent on courses passed and I am within 2.0 credits of a degree.
My extenuating circumstances stem from a psychological assessment of ADHD type-2. However, I firmly believe that I have grasped control for the majority of my symptoms and I will only provide you how I control my symptoms of ADHD: which are through exercise, a decrease in sugar consumption, and 7 hours of sleep. However, studying can be difficult due to some anxiety discomfort caused by the medication.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: My academic plan includes taking Arth 250 in the fall (online), Arth 215 in the winter (evening class), and to retake Psychology 100 in the fall and winter (online):
I have chosen Art History courses because I strengthened my critical writing skills and I learned descriptive writing strategies that have allowed me to communicate more effective and clearly. My ability to write an argument critically or descriptive has increased due to the teaching methods and feedback that was provided by the amazing professor in the Art History program (and Philosophy program, Phil 259). I have learned that simple writing with lots of detail and high use of concepts learned are the most important aspects to answer a question, or to making a sound and reasonable statement. Furthermore, I enjoy Art History courses and I am excited to learn more of the discipline.
I have chosen to retake Psychology 100 because I want to increase my grade in the course, which will help me increase my overall GPA. I have learned a lot from the concepts taught in Psychology 100. In learning the meaning of psychology concepts such as ¿¿achievement motivation¿, I have realized that I did not have motivation to finish the degree because I was afraid of accountability. The ¿¿Five Factor Model¿ helped me realize that my personality traits also hindered my accountability because I was too neurotic and agreeable, and more importantly, that I was not conscientious enough. To increase my accountability, I have worked with family, friends, and medical professionals to increase my conscientiousness to time and goals, and my neuroticism and agreeableness has balanced. Importantly, I have learned the meaning of ¿¿consolidation¿ and that consolidation is required to perform better in academics and any other learning process. The techniques that I plan to use to consolidate my education is to have good agenda management, to do weekly reviews of notes and lectures, to continue to ask for clarification, and to repeat and rehearse study material. Also, and indirectly, I also plan to continue in my healthy habits of decreasing caffeine intake and eating healthy. Cardiovascular exercises 3-4 days a week to increase physical and mental endurance and to continue taking medication (Concerta) to treat my symptoms of ADHD.
I strongly believe that I am motivated to graduate from Queen¿¿s University with my Economics degree. I am motivated because I have the proper academic tools to attain a cumulative GPA of 1.60 or greater by 2016 so that I can graduate from Queen¿¿s University with academic integrity.
I sincerely hope that you can consider a lesser penalty by approving my appeal in regards to section Queen¿¿s University Academic Regulation 20cii, and that I have proven that I am motivated to graduate from Queen¿¿s university in 2016.
Sincerely yours,
Luis Aguilar,
