Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Hi,

I am writing to request consideration for credit standing (CR) for the MATH111 course I completed in the 2022-2023 academic year. Despite passing, I only achieved a grade of C-, which does not accurately reflect my capabilities due to exceptional circumstances.

During the fall semester’s final examination period, I experienced my first outbreak of COVID-19 influenza since arriving in Canada for my studies. The high fever and associated symptoms severely impaired my ability to concentrate and effectively prepare for my exams. Being new to the university and unfamiliar with the academic regulations, I was not aware that it was possible to defer final examinations due to illness. Consequently, I proceeded to take the exam under less than optimal conditions.

Originally, I had planned to retake MATH111 in my junior year to improve my GPA, crucial for my graduate school applications. However, I was recently informed that the course is no longer offered, and no alternative courses are available for retake. This situation puts me at a disadvantage, as it impacts my ability to enhance my GPA and, subsequently, my graduate study prospects.

Given the circumstances of my illness and the subsequent discontinuation of MATH111, I respectfully request that my grade be converted to a CR notation to mitigate its impact on my cumulative GPA. Unfortunately, I do not have official medical documentation of my illness, as I did not visit a hospital but treated myself at home. I do, however, have photographic evidence of a positive COVID-19 test result on my phone, which I am prepared to submit as proof of my condition during the examination period.

I understand this request is exceptional and appreciate your consideration of my situation. Granting this petition would significantly aid in maintaining the integrity of my academic record in light of unforeseen and uncontrollable circumstances.

Thank you for considering my request. I am willing to provide any further information needed and look forward to your favorable response.

Best regards
Zihao Lin
