Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I am writing to request a CR standing for the courses BIOL 243 and BIOL 102, completed in the Fall 2022 term. I understand that this petition is being submitted past the usual deadline, and I appreciate your consideration of my circumstances.
During the Fall 2022 term, I faced significant mental health challenges that severely impacted my academic performance. At the time, I was not fully aware of the extent to which my mental health was compromised. It was only during the winter term in which symptoms became so severe that I essentially failed all my classes. I think when I was in this situation at the time, I kind of thought that’s what life was like, I didn’t realize how impaired my academic ability truly was. It was more of this mindset of just, ‘you just need to try harder’, without consideration of why everything was so hard. I believe this likey why I sought treatment so late and didn’t fully understand why my life was the way it was for so long. It was only after receiving consistent and effective treatment(longer than 1 year), and deep self-reflection, that I was able to fully comprehend the severity of my condition at the time.
While I did achieve a passing grade in these courses. The grade I received was substantially lower than what I believe I could have achieved under healthier circumstances, I feel this is quite evident given my performance within the last 4 semesters in which my average GPA has been dramatically higher(my gpa for this summer term has not been uploaded yet, but it should be greater than 3.7).
It took a great deal of reflection and acceptance to recognize the full impact of my mental health issues on my academic performance. I did not initially realize how poorly I was functioning during the Fall 2022 term until I had experienced a prolonged period of recovery and stability. This insight, although delayed, has been crucial in my understanding of why my performance in these courses was so poor, but also why my current performance has been so strong.
I would greatly appreciate the ability to move on from this time period of my life, with a transcript that accurately represents who I am as a student and not a version of myself that was unwell. I appreciate your understanding and consideration of my petition and I am committed to maintaining my mental health and continuing my academic journey. I hope that you will grant this request for CR standing, allowing me to reflect my true capabilities in my academic record. I have attached recent medical documentation that confirms my situation and health during this time period. Please let me know if further documentation is required.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
