Petition Letter: Dean Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.

Dear Dean Jenn Stephenson

I am writing to share personal circumstances that have unfortunately had a significant impact on my academic performance during the year 2023-2024.

I am petitioning to drop MATH 121 (Winter 2024), PSYC 100 (Winter 2024), and CHEM 112 (Winter 2024).

Over the past few months, I have faced the tragic loss of my dearest grandfather, who was an integral part of my life and a pillar of support. His passing has left an immense void in my life, affecting me emotionally and mentally. The grief I have been experiencing has been overwhelming, and it has been difficult to focus on my studies during this time of mourning.

In addition to this heartbreaking loss, I have also been dealing with the separation of my parents, a situation that could potentially lead to a divorce. The strain of witnessing my parents' relationship deteriorate has added to my emotional burden. The uncertainty and instability that come with the possibility of a divorce have caused me immense stress and anxiety. As a student trying to manage both my academic responsibilities and these personal challenges, I have found it increasingly difficult to maintain the focus and concentration required to succeed in my studies. Despite my best efforts to cope with these challenges, I have found it difficult to maintain the same level of academic achievement that I had previously demonstrated.

I understand the importance of maintaining academic standards, and I take full responsibility for my performance and regret that I was not able to maintain the level of performance I had originally planned. However, I believe that the extraordinary circumstances I have faced should be taken into consideration.

I am committing to overcoming these personal challenges and returning to the level of academic excellence that I have always aspired to achieve. Being out of school is not just a break in routine—it feels like a loss of purpose and direction during a time when I already feel so vulnerable. The structure and support that school provides have been my anchors, and without them, I fear falling behind and losing the progress I've worked so hard to make. It’s overwhelming to think about the setbacks this could cause in my education and future. Yet, I am determined not to let these circumstances define me. With your support and understanding, I believe I can find the strength to navigate this difficult period and continue my studies with renewed focus and determination.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my situation. I would be grateful for the opportunity to discuss this matter further and explore possible solutions.

Yours sincerely,

Ariel Zoulo
