Petition Letter

Petition Letter: My name is Aly Goldman, and I am entering my third year in political science at Queen’s University. I am writing to respectfully request an exemption from the 6.0-unit transfer credit limit so that I can study abroad at Lorenzo de’ Medici University in Florence, Italy, during the winter 2025 term.

Studying abroad has always been a significant goal of mine, and Lorenzo de’ Medici University presents a unique academic opportunity that aligns with my educational and personal aspirations. The following courses have been carefully chosen for their relevance to my academic goals and their potential to provide insights into global political science and cultural studies:

1. War and Media (POL 301 F)
2. International Terrorism (POL 380 F)
3. Anthropology of Violence and Conflict (POL 326 F)
4. Introduction to the Fashion Industry (FAS 100 F)
5. Fashion Marketing (FAS 215 F)

While I understand the current regulations limit students to 6.0 units of transfer credit through a Letter of Permission, I believe this restriction would limit my ability to take full advantage of the offerings at Lorenzo de’ Medici. Each of these courses will contribute meaningfully to my academic development, particularly in broadening my understanding of political science in a global context and providing cross-disciplinary knowledge.

This study abroad experience offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse myself in Italian culture while gaining valuable academic insights unavailable through Queen’s. I am confident that this experience will enhance my academic and personal growth, preparing me for my future career in international relations.

I respectfully request that the Faculty grant me an exception to the 6.0-unit limit, allowing me to enroll in these five courses. I believe this opportunity will profoundly impact my academic journey and future career.

Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
Aly Goldman

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: In conjunction with my petition to study abroad at Lorenzo de’ Medici University, I have developed an academic plan to ensure my success during and after my study abroad experience. This plan addresses how I will integrate the courses into my degree program.

Selected Courses:

1. War and Media (POL 301 F / COM 301 F)
This course will help me understand the role of media in shaping public perceptions during wartime, an essential area in my political science studies, especially concerning global conflicts and communication strategies.

2. International Terrorism (POL 380 F / HIS 380 F)
Studying international terrorism is crucial for my focus on global security and political violence. This course will allow me to analyze different forms of terrorism and counter-terrorism strategies across various regions.

3. Anthropology of Violence and Conflict (POL 326 F / ANT 326 F)
This course will provide a deep understanding of the dynamics of violence and conflict through an anthropological lens, offering insights that will enhance my approach to political science.

4. Introduction to the Fashion Industry (FAS 100 F)
As a complementary elective, this course offers a broader cultural perspective and introduces me to the fashion industry’s global dynamics, particularly within the “Made in Italy” phenomenon.

5. Fashion Marketing (FAS 215 F)
This course will provide valuable knowledge in global marketing strategies, aligning with my interest in the intersections between culture, politics, and international commerce.

Plan for Academic Success:

1. Course Load Management:
I have carefully selected these five courses to maintain a manageable yet challenging academic load. The blend of theory, practical knowledge, and interdisciplinary studies will keep me engaged without overloading my schedule.

2. Academic Integration:
Each course has been chosen and aligned with my academic goals and degree requirements at Queen’s. Upon successful completion, these courses will contribute towards fulfilling my degree requirements, particularly within my political science major and elective slots, demonstrating my academic focus and commitment.

3. Utilizing University Resources:
I plan to fully utilize the academic and personal support services Lorenzo de’ Medici University offers, including their academic advising and counselling services. Regular communication with my academic advisors at Queen’s will ensure that my courses remain on track and meet the transfer credit requirements.

4. Post-Study Integration:
Upon returning to Queen’s, I will promptly submit all necessary documents, including transcripts, to ensure that my transfer credits are processed promptly. I will also take POLS 350 during my fourth year along with the required 12.00 units in POLS-400 level courses to complete my degree requirements at Queen’s. I will utilize the knowledge and experiences gained during my study abroad term.

This academic plan ensures that I am well-prepared to succeed in my studies at Lorenzo de’ Medici University. I am confident that this experience will significantly enhance my academic portfolio and prepare me for future professional endeavours.

Sincerely,
Aly Goldman
