Petition Letter

Petition Letter: My name is Caleb Solway, and I am entering my third year of Economics at Queen's University. Studying abroad has always been a dream of mine, particularly at the Charles III University of Madrid. The rich cultural and academic opportunities offered there would significantly enhance my educational experience.
I am looking to enroll in the following courses:
1. New Trends in Media
2. Film Criticism
3. American Cinema
4. Labor law

While I understand the current regulations limit students to 6.0 units abroad, I believe this restriction would hinder my ability to fully immerse myself in the unique offerings at Charles III University of Madrid. Each of these courses has been carefully selected to complement my academic goals and enrich my understanding of both my major and the world. I respectfully request an exemption from the 6.0 unit limit to allow me to pursue these courses. Studying abroad is a unique chance to experience life in a different culture, expanding my worldview and enhancing skills like adaptability and resilience. This exposure to new languages and customs fosters independence and provides a fresh perspective on global issues, enriching my academic journey. Additionally, it offers the chance to build international relationships that can boost cultural competence and open doors for future collaborations and career paths, making it a beneficial experience both personally and professionally. This opportunity is truly once in a lifetime, and I am confident it will profoundly impact my academic and personal growth.

Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to your response.

Best Regards,

Caleb Solway

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: My Academic Plan

1. Course of Study

I am currently registered in my desired degree plan, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Economics at Queen's University. I have reviewed my Academic Advisement Report in SOLUS and understand my remaining degree requirements. To enrich my academic journey, I plan to study at Charles III University of Madrid and take the following courses:

New Trends in Media
Film Criticism
American Cinema
Labor law

Each of these courses has been carefully selected to complement my major and broaden my cultural and intellectual horizons.

2. Full-time vs Part-time

I plan to take a full-time course load of 12.0 units per term, which is about 25-30 hours of classes per week, plus additional time for coursework and studying. This schedule will allow me to fully immerse myself in my studies while also experiencing the vibrant culture of Madrid.

3. Strategies for Success

Academic Strategies:

Regular Meetings with Professors and Teaching Assistants: I will attend office hours regularly to seek advice and clarify any doubts about the course material.

Peer Study Groups: Joining or forming study groups with fellow students will help me stay engaged and accountable.

Utilize University Resources: I will make use of resources such as the library, academic workshops, and online databases to enhance my learning experience.

Personal Adjustments

Time Management: I will create a detailed schedule to balance my academic responsibilities with cultural exploration and personal time. Tools like planners and digital calendars will help me stay organized.

Health and Wellness: Maintaining my physical and mental health is crucial. I will engage in regular physical activities, practice mindfulness, and seek support from counselling services if needed.

4. Addressing Extenuating Circumstances

In the event of any extenuating circumstances, such as illness or unforeseen personal challenges, I have a plan to
manage these effectively:

Medical Support: I will register with local health services in Madrid to ensure I have access to medical care if needed.

Academic Support: Should I encounter academic difficulties, I will immediately reach out to my academic advisors at both Queen's University and Charles III University of Madrid for guidance and support.

Personal Support Network: Staying connected with family and friends back home through regular communication will provide emotional support during my time abroad.

Conclusion

By following this academic plan, I am confident that I will achieve academic success and make the most of my study abroad experience at Charles III University of Madrid. I appreciate your consideration of my request to exceed the 6.0 unit limit, as this will significantly contribute to my educational and personal growth.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best Regards,
Caleb Solway
