Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I am a concurrent education student in my third year at Queen's University, majoring in
Mathematics—Bachelor of Science (Honours). I am writing this letter to request that the course
STAT 268 be added to my 2024 fall term.
When I first entered Queen's University, I had the intention of majoring in Biochemistry -
Bachelor of Science (Honours). However, due to mental and psychological challenges during
my first year, my academics fell behind and I was placed on academic probation. As a result, I
was not able to choose a major after my first year. During my second year, I worked hard to
increase my GPA, still with the intention of majoring in biochemistry at the end of my second
year. Following my second year, I was released from academic probation however, I did not
reach the requirements to major in biochemistry. After discussing my options with an academic
advisor on a number of occasions and corresponding with the Biochemistry department, I
decided to major in Mathematics instead. Because many of my completed courses were in
biochemistry, changing my major led to difficulties with creating a workable timetable. There
were a number of time conflicts with the different core Mathematics courses including when
trying to enroll in both first and second-year required courses. I spoke further to my academic
advisors on a number of occasions about my current requirements for a Mathematics major in
relation to my completed courses (e.g. Math 121) and in the end, it was decided that the best
course of action would be to enroll in STAT 268 (A core course) as well as Math 221 (A
corequisite). This would also allow me to take STAT 269 in the 2025 winter term. In addition, if I
am able to enroll in STAT 268, this would allow me to finish my Bachelor of Science degree in
four years at University. Otherwise, without STAT 268, I would likely need to add an extra year of
University to complete my degree. Unfortunately, this entire process took an inordinate amount
of time and thus, I was unable to enroll in STAT 268 in time and was placed on the waiting list
instead. In the end, I did end up first in line on the waiting list but ultimately, did not get in.
I recognize that many of these issues were preventable with better planning and initiative on my
part. However, certain difficulties and personal issues in my first and partly my second year led
me to fall behind in my intended goals. I am trying hard to get back on track and feel that I am in
a much better position to achieve success.
I am hoping for your kind consideration in my petition to allow me to enroll in STAT 268.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: As noted in my petition letter, in order to meet my academic goals, I am changing programs and
I have decided to major in mathematics instead. By allowing me to enroll in STAT 268 (A core
course), this would also allow me to take STAT 269 in the 2025 winter term. In addition, if I am
able to enroll in STAT 268, this would allow me to finish my Bachelor of Science degree in four
years. Otherwise, without STAT 268, I would likely need to add an extra year of University to
complete my degree.
For further details, I have completed 42 units of elective courses and 6 units of the mathematics
core courses. If this petition is accepted, my plan for this year is to enroll in 6 units of core
courses and 9 units of elective courses in the fall term. Thereafter, during the winter semester, I
will enroll in 9 units of core courses and 6 units of elective courses. Therefore, after completing
my third year of University, I will have completed 21 units of core courses and 57 elective courses for
a total of 78 units completed. In the summer term, I will then take 3 units of a core course and 3
units of an elective course for a total of 84 units completed at the start of my fourth year. During
my fourth year, I plan to take 18 units of core courses in the fall term and 18 units of core
courses in the winter to fully complete my major after the fourth year allowing me to continue my
concurrent education degree in the fifth year.
