I am writing to formally request approval to enroll in four courses (12.0 units) while studying abroad at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in Winter 2025. As a third-year psychology student pursuing an Honours Bachelor of Science, I am deeply committed to both my academic and personal growth, and I believe that this opportunity presents an exceptional academic experience not available at Queen’s University.
The courses offered at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona provide a unique opportunity to study psychology from a global perspective. One of the key courses I plan to take is a psychology course called Emotions, Stress, and Self-Regulation, which delves into how emotions and stress responses influence decision-making, learning, and overall mental and physical health. The course emphasizes developing practical skills for managing stress and emotional responses, which aligns directly with my interest in understanding how stress affects emotional regulation in young people. Additionally, its focus on the social and contextual factors that shape stress responses and emotional regulation closely aligns with the content of a social psychology course. As a result, I anticipate that it will fulfill one of my social psychology course requirements for my degree at Queen’s. The specialized content, coupled with a global perspective on mental health, offers insights that are not available at Queen’s, making this a unique opportunity to expand my knowledge in this critical area of psychology.
Moreover, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona provides the opportunity to engage with faculty and students from diverse cultural backgrounds, enhancing my ability to understand how mental health care is approached in different sociocultural contexts. This global exposure will not only enrich my academic experience but also equip me with critical skills that are vital for my future career as a clinical psychologist working with diverse populations. Academic Plan
Academic Plan: While studying abroad in Winter 2025, I plan to take four courses (12.0 units), consisting of one psychology course and three electives. This aligns with my current academic trajectory, as I am on track with my major requirements and I am currently completing four psychology courses (12.0 units) this semester. I have also fulfilled all necessary science requirements for my degree.
In consultation with Anja Wilke, the Academic Advisor and Assistant to the Undergraduate Chair in the Department of Psychology, I have carefully reviewed my degree requirements. Ideally, the psychology course I plan to take abroad will fulfill a social psychology course requirement. However, Anja confirmed that even if it does not, it will still count as an elective and contribute to my degree. The three elective courses will fulfill my remaining elective requirements, keeping me on track to graduate on time. Anja also assured me that I can take PSYC 302, the mandatory course I would miss during Winter 2025, in Winter 2026, allowing me to remain eligible to complete my thesis in my fourth year as planned.
This study abroad experience will not only keep me on track academically but will also provide an invaluable opportunity to broaden my understanding of psychology in a global context.
