Petition Letter: Associate Dean Dr.Stephenson,
The purpose of my petition is for course enrolment past the deadline for the introductory Latin course LATN 110 with instructor Dr.Poletti. I missed the original deadline for course enrolment due to a family emergency. On Friday, September 13th I had to leave campus and travel to Toronto to be with my father and grandmother after she had a medical emergency and was admitted to the hospital. I was asked by my family to join my father as we are the closest living relatives to my grandmother and our support was needed both by her and her doctors due to the fact that she is not currently in a good physical or mental state. My mother and siblings live outside of Canada and were unable to travel to Toronto to take my place. Originally, I planned to return to campus on Sunday, September 15th but due to complications with my grandmother's hospital admittance I did not return until the night of the 16th. This experience was very stressful and it was not until the following morning after my return that I realised my mistake of missing the enrolment deadline.
I did not enroll in the class earlier in the week as I was uncertain about my decision to enroll, I planned to meet with an academic advisor to discuss the course and my schedule on the Friday of that week, my least busy day of the week, but could not due to the previously stated circumstances. Over the past week, I have met with multiple first-year academic advisors over Zoom as well as Dr.Poletti for clarification on the course requirements and expectations and assistance with my petition. I have attended one of the Latin classes and have already begun reviewing and studying the content I have missed to catch up with my peers in the case that my enrolment is approved. I feel this course will help me with my future studies in philosophy, my current desired major, as I explain in my academic plan. Attached with my petition is a letter from Dr.Poletti supporting my delayed enrolment in her course. I would greatly appreciate your consideration of my delayed enrolment to the course as it is not only a course that is of great interest to me but also a course that I believe will be helpful to me in my current and future studies. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I am in the Bachelor of Arts and although I have not yet declared my major my current plan is to study and major in philosophy. Originally, I was enrolled in intermediate French however after a few weeks of classes I am planning to drop that course and am requesting to enroll in introductory Latin as I feel it better supports my plan of studying philosophy as it is a classical course and contains content that I believe will support my philosophy studies. The Latin course's main focus is on the foundational elements of Latin as a language as well as ancient Roman culture which has many connections to the content I am currently studying and will study in the future. I plan to continue Latin in my following years at Queens and Latin 110A is a pre-requisite I will need to achieve this. As for my plan to catch up on the work and content I have missed; I have already begun studying the first few chapters of the textbook that Dr.Poletti has been teaching in class. Throughout my schooling I have studied multiple languages including French, Spanish and Mandarin all of which I believe will help me quickly catch up to the rest of the class. I plan to dedicate the next few weeks to catching up in the course, I will be attending office hours with the instructor as well as attending potential study groups Dr.Poletti has mentioned may be meeting soon.
