Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Jacob Haid, and I am currently entering my third year of my studies majoring in Sociology at Queen's University. I am writing to formally request an exemption from the 6.0 unit limit imposed on study abroad programs. This limit, while understandable, would significantly hinder my ability to fully immerse myself in the unique academic and cultural opportunities available at Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, a university I have long aspired to attend as part of my academic journey.
Studying abroad is more than just an academic pursuit for me. This opportunity represents a transformative experience that will allow me to expand my global perspective and enhance critical skills such as adaptability, resilience, and cross-cultural communication. The following courses I have selected at UAB are not only relevant to my major but will also contribute to a holistic understanding of the intersection between sociology and other vital areas of global society:
- Politics of the Developing World
- Spanish Contemporary Art
- Urban Interventions: Graffiti & Public Sculpture
- Intercultural Communication
- Modernism
While I fully appreciate the regulations limiting study abroad courses to 6.0 units, I believe that the addition of these specific courses, bringing my total to 15.0 units, will allow me to gain a more comprehensive academic and cultural experience. This would not only align with my academic goals, but would also facilitate my personal and professional development by enabling me to engage with topics that intersect across academic disciplines.
The opportunity to immerse myself fully in this diverse academic environment is a rare and invaluable experience that will foster my intellectual and cultural growth. By expanding my course load, I can take full advantage of the interdisciplinary nature of the subjects. My newfound knowledge and cultural enrichment will further my understanding of global sociological dynamics, while broadening my life experiences.
Sincerely,
Jacob Haid

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: To ensure I remain committed to both my academic responsibilities and personal well-being, I have developed a detailed academic plan. I am confident that I can manage this workload effectively and achieve success. My academics will be supported through a combination of regular meetings with professors and peers, time management strategies, and support systems. In particular, I will prioritize:
Academic Support: Consistent consultations with professors and academic advisors will ensure I stay on track with course content and expectations.
Time Management: I will allocate specific blocks of time each day to coursework, ensuring I remain focused while balancing the cultural experiences available to me in Barcelona.
Personal Support: I will maintain regular contact with family and friends for emotional support, ensuring I have a stable foundation while navigating life abroad.
Should I encounter any unforeseen difficulties, whether academic or personal, I will promptly reach out to the appropriate resources for support. I have already identified local health and academic services in Barcelona and will make full use of these networks to ensure my well-being and academic success.
In conclusion, I respectfully request your reconsideration of the 6.0-unit limit for my upcoming term at UAB. I am confident that by allowing me to exceed this limit, I will be able to fully engage with a broader academic framework. This will significantly enhance my education and career prospects. Thank you for taking the time to review my request. I look forward to hearing back soon and continuing my application process.
