Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,

I am a Global Development Studies student entering my third year at Queen’s University and am actively exploring the option of studying abroad in the Winter 2025 semester, for which I am submitting this petition. As a Global Development student, living and studying in a new country can provide invaluable insights and experiences that would greatly enhance my academic journey. After careful research, I am excited about the unique academic environment at Jean Moulin University Lyon 3 in France, and I am writing to request approval to take six courses during my time abroad.

I have selected courses that will not only complement but significantly enrich my DEVS major by broadening my understanding of cultural, legal, and social dynamics on a global scale. The courses I plan to take are “French as a Foreign Language (FLE)” and “Introduction to French Culture and Civilization”, both of which are compulsory for all students in the SELF program. Additionally, I will be enrolling in “Introduction to the Law of the Sea”, “The European Renaissance”, “New Media in 20th and 21st Century Art”, and “Modern Journalism and the Development of Democracy (1850-1950)”. These courses are not currently offered at Queen’s, and taking these six courses while abroad will allow me to stay on track to graduate in Spring 2026, fully supporting my academic goals.

At Queen’s, I have thoroughly enjoyed engaging in discussions during lectures and tutorials, exchanging perspectives with peers, professors, and TAs. The opportunity to participate in these dialogues within an international context promises to broaden my worldview even further and provide new perspectives on global challenges.

The “French as a Foreign Language (FLE)” and “Introduction to French Culture and Civilization” courses are mandatory components of the SELF program at Jean Moulin University and will be integral to my experience abroad. These courses will not only enhance my language proficiency but also immerse me in French culture, which is vital for my personal and academic growth as a Global Development student. Mastering the language and gaining a deeper cultural understanding will allow me to fully engage with the community and enhance my learning experience.

The additional courses, such as “Introduction to the Law of the Sea” and “The European Renaissance”, will provide me with a deeper understanding of global historical and legal frameworks, particularly in a European context. These subjects will deepen my grasp of international governance, cultural evolution, and global relations, which are crucial for my academic focus.

“Modern Journalism and the Development of Democracy (1850-1950)” will examine the relationship between journalism and the development of democracy in the U.S., the UK, and Western Europe. This course will give me historical insights into how the media has shaped political landscapes and influenced public opinion during a pivotal time in global history. Understanding the role of journalism in democracy is highly relevant to my studies in global development, especially in exploring how media impacts governance and societal structures.

Finally, “New Media in 20th and 21st Century Art” will offer an exciting opportunity to explore the intersection of technology, art, and society, expanding my understanding of how cultural expressions influence and reflect contemporary global issues.

Jean Moulin University’s course offerings and academic environment have drawn me in throughout my research process, and I am confident that studying there will significantly enhance my learning in Global Development Studies. I am eager to return to Kingston with new knowledge and perspectives that will fuel my passion for my final year at Queen’s.
