Petition Letter: I hope this message finds you well. My name is Wolfgang Schad, and I am currently a third-year undergraduate student majoring in Economics. I am writing to discuss a challenging situation I faced during the past academic year.
In April, I was diagnosed with Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which required me to undergo a total of 18 weeks of chemotherapy, consisting of six sessions every three weeks. Additionally, I needed to travel home weekly for check-ups with my oncologist to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment. Also, I was not able to attend class for almost a month post treatment since I had a very weak immune system. Unfortunately, this extensive treatment regimen significantly impacted my attendance, particularly in my Econ 255 class.
As a result of my absences, I struggled to keep up with the coursework and ultimately received a grade of D in the class. While I successfully passed, I believe my grade does not accurately reflect my capabilities or potential, as I would have performed better had I been able to attend classes consistently.
Given these circumstances, I kindly request consideration for a credit replacement to mitigate the adverse effect this grade has had on my GPA and future opportunities. I appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

Appeals to the Board of Studies must include a letter based on one or more of the Grounds for Appeal (Appeal Regulation 3.4). What are the grounds you are basing your appeal on?
- The Associate Dean's decision did not follow the rules of procedural fairness. A breach of procedural fairness includes such things as the Associate Dean failed to:
- Make a reasonable decision in your appeal. A “reasonable” decision is one that is based on evidence, thought out and supported by facts and logical inferences from the facts. To be reasonable, the decision must contain adequate reasons for the conclusions.
Appeal Grounds Details: I am writing to appeal my decision for a credit replacement in ECON 255. I believe that I was given an unfair ruling due to my circumstances, and to be honest, the answer I was given was kind of offensive. The response to my claim was being told that I should have taken the semester off and completely derail my life due to going through chemotherapy. I was also told that since I failed the final exam, I did not deserve my credit replacement. My in-depth reasoning will give more justification below. I truly hope that the Board of Studies will be able to see where I am coming from as an aspiring law student; I am not able to just take a semester off.
Appeal Letter
Appeal Letter: I believe that my appeal was wrongfully denied and that the reasons I was given are honestly laughable and offensive. In my original petition, I explained how I was not able to go to class due to the fact that I had a very weak immune system and was prone to enhanced sickness. I explained how the fact I couldn’t go to class affected my midterm grade, which ultimately gave me a lower grade in the end. I truly believe that I could not have given a more offensive answer. I was basically told that I should have known this would happen and should have derailed my life and taken the semester off. I would like to say that it is not everyday that an 18-year-old student gets diagnosed with cancer. I wanted to be as normal as a kid possible and not have to defer a year so that I could keep my life on track. Also, I have seen credit replacements granted to fellow students for minimal reasons, and the fact that it is not given to a student who had cancer is a bit ridiculous. Another excuse I was given was that I failed both the final and the midterm. The reason I gave for that is that the reason I failed the midterm is that I could not go to class. I was truly shocked to see these answers given to me and was a bit disheartened to see that I was the only one to be blamed in this. I will take blame for some of this result but I was not able to attend class for the first month of school. I truly hope the Board of Admissions is able to see my point of view on this story, and I thank you all for your time.
