Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Hello, my name is Xingtong Hu. I am writing to formally petition to drop the HIST104 course due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control, which have significantly impacted my academic performance.
Throughout this term, I have been actively participating in classes and seminars and putting in my best effort to complete the coursework. However, when I started drafting my essay last week, I felt an overwhelming sense of pressure from this course. As someone who is not a native Canadian, I find that the majority of the knowledge points covered in this course require substantial prior background knowledge. I have been working very hard to keep up with the course, often spending a great deal of time reading the materials. However, as the second half of the term began and I started preparing for the final review, I was devastated to realize that the gap between my understanding and the course expectations kept growing.
Particularly, I only learned yesterday that the final exam for HIST104 is in the form of an extensive essay. As a non-native English speaker, I found this exam format extremely difficult and stressful because my English writing skills are not sufficient to meet these requirements. (In fact, this letter itself has been written with the help of a translation tool.)
In addition, I have been suffering from persistent insomnia since early November, which has led to sinus arrhythmia. These symptoms have left me physically and mentally exhausted, severely affecting my ability to concentrate on my studies and complete course tasks effectively. I am currently taking Coenzyme Q10 to alleviate these symptoms, but the recovery has been slow, and the ongoing academic stress has further exacerbated my condition. I am genuinely worried that this course might negatively affect my performance in all of my other courses.
The combination of health issues and academic pressure has left me feeling powerless and deeply distressed. While I have been trying my best to overcome these challenges, the situation has gone beyond what I can manage, and I am unable to meet the expectations of this course.
I have attached my seminar attendance records to demonstrate my commitment to the course. I have been thoroughly preparing for the assigned readings before each class, but due to the language barrier, I often find myself unable to actively participate in discussions, which makes me feel even more helpless.
I sincerely request your understanding and approval to drop this course under these exceptional circumstances.
Thank you for taking the time to read my petition. If you require any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
