Appeal Grounds

Appeals to the Board of Studies must include a letter based on one or more of the Grounds for Appeal (Appeal Regulation 3.4). What are the grounds you are basing your appeal on?
  • The Associate Dean's decision did not follow the rules of procedural fairness. A breach of procedural fairness includes such things as the Associate Dean failed to:
    • Make a reasonable decision in your appeal. A “reasonable” decision is one that is based on evidence, thought out and supported by facts and logical inferences from the facts. To be reasonable, the decision must contain adequate reasons for the conclusions.
Appeal Grounds Details: I believe the decision to deny the credit standing was made prematurely. I was in correspondence with the Faculty of Arts and Science Petitions regarding an off-campus physician's note form. On December 13th I was told my petition would be sent to the Associate Dean on December 16th if they did not hear back from me. I replied to them on the 14th letting them know I would need to call my physician's office on that day to get it filled out, since they were closed on the weekend. I was told that I could forward the document once I had it. I was under the impression that the petition would be sent once I sent the document, but I received my decision on December 18th, and did not get the form until January 2nd.

Appeal Letter

Appeal Letter: I believe that my appeal for a credit standing in BCHM 315 was denied due to insufficient evidence from a third party to corroborate my experiences during the 2023 fall semester. It was confirmed by the Faculty of Arts and Science Petitions that I met the requirements to qualify, and they also recommended me to provide documentation by my health care provider to build my case.

During our correspondence, they provided me with an off-campus physician’s note form URL which I sent to my family doctor, who has worked with me for most of my life. Given that their office was very busy, they were not able to give me the completed form before the decision to deny the credit standing request was made.

I understand why the credit standing was denied, since the decision was likely made relying only on my perspective. Relying on my words alone would be insufficient to reasonably grant my request. However, I believe the physician’s note provides important third-party evidence to substantiate the negative impact of my mental health throughout my life, but also particularly during the 2023 fall semester.

Thank you for your time and I would greatly appreciate your consideration.

Documentation

I plan to submit additional documentation at a later date: An off-campus physician's note form will be submitted to ascbos@queensu.ca same-day (2025-01-10), as I was unable to upload the document to the website for an unknown technical difficulty.
