Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am writing to formally request a late withdrawal from the course DEVS 101 due to extenuating circumstances that have significantly affected my performance and ability to succeed in this course.

During the semester, I initially performed reasonably well on my first assignment. However, during the period of the second assignment I my mental health and physiological state was very poor. This is because I was informed by one of my family members, that a cousin of mine was struggling with drugs. She is a mother of 2 children and has had some drug issues in the past. I was told that she is living in the streets and has almost no connection with any of our family members. Upon hearing this, my mental health was depleted, it was so hard being so far away from home (I live in Vancouver), knowing that I was unable to help my cousin or comfort my family, I also could not stop thinking about her children. Due to my altered psychological state it was very hard for me to focus on the course material while trying to keep up with my core courses. When I submitted the second assignment I knew I wasn't going to do very well. However, after receiving the grade back it was much worse than I expected. This grade has had a substantial impact on my overall standing in the course as well as my GPA. Normally I am not the kind of person to make excuses or to quit after a setback but it was just too hard for me to focus due to my mental health. I am still not in a good place but I am trying to push through with my main focus on my core courses (BCHM 218, CHEM 281, PHGY 215, and ANAT 215). Unfortunately, the assingment grade was released after the course drop deadline, hence I was unable to evaluate my circumstance and withdrawal from the course before the drop course deadline.

I kindly ask for your understanding and approval of this petition, allowing me to withdraw from DEVS 101 beyond the official deadline.
