Course: POLS 250
Date: December 10, 2024
Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
I am writing to request a late course drop for POLS 250 due to significant extenuating circumstances that have severely affected my academic performance this term.
Earlier this term, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a psychological condition that has profoundly impacted my ability to focus and manage academic responsibilities. The diagnosis came after experiencing significant emotional challenges that disrupted my daily routine and my capacity to meet course requirements. As part of my treatment plan, I was prescribed new medications, which required an adjustment period and resulted in side effects that further hindered my ability to concentrate and perform effectively in this course.
These challenges coincided with critical deadlines for the course, including the midterm, which I was unable to complete. The effects of my condition, combined with the medication adjustments, have persisted throughout the term, making it increasingly difficult to catch up on missed material and participate meaningfully in class. Despite my efforts to manage these challenges, the circumstances were beyond my control and had a direct and debilitating effect on my academic performance.
Since my diagnosis, I have been consulting with healthcare professionals to stabilize my mental health and develop coping strategies. However, the impact of this adjustment period has made it clear that continuing in this course is not feasible for me at this time. Dropping the course will allow me to focus on my overall well-being and other academic commitments.
I have attached [or will submit] supporting documentation from my healthcare provider to corroborate these circumstances and their effect on my academic performance.
Thank you for your consideration of my request. I deeply appreciate your understanding and support during this challenging time.
Sincerely,
Ava Hill
