Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,

I am writing to petition for the late drop of the following courses: BHCM 315, MICR 386 (Fall 2023), EPID 301 (Winter 2024), and ECON 110 (Fall 2023/Winter 2024). These courses were not dropped before the deadline due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control.

From November 2023 to May 2024, I experienced an acute mental health crisis that severely impacted my ability to manage coursework and examinations. This crisis was compounded by my pre-existing disability, for which I receive accommodations through QSAS. Unfortunately, during this period, I was incapacitated to the extent that I could not utilize support systems, including QSAS or academic advisors, which, in hindsight, were critically needed.

Despite my condition, I was able to complete some courses during this time. This was primarily because I could manage assessments for online courses during moments of relatively higher functioning.

However, during periods of severe impairment - such as examination periods and the course drop deadlines - I was unable to meet academic expectations. I have included a form from my physician to substantiate the severity of my condition during this time.

Since then, I have taken significant steps to address my mental health with my physician’s support. These include medication adjustments and ongoing treatment with a clinical psychologist. My improved stability and academic performance during the Fall 2024 term demonstrate my commitment to managing my mental health and academic responsibilities effectively moving forward.

I am deeply regretful about my performance during this challenging period. It does not reflect my dedication to my education or my future aspirations, which include pursuing graduate studies. The inability to drop these courses has significantly affected my GPA and may hinder my eligibility for further academic opportunities. I respectfully request your consideration to allow me to remove these courses from my record, enabling me to focus on my academic and personal growth without the additional burden of these failed courses.
